Most people think Rocket Lab is a rocket company. But that is only the surface. Behind the rockets, Peter Beck has been quietly building something much bigger.
Beck quietly used the company’s capital to acquire some of the world’s leading satellite component manufacturers and bring them into Rocket Lab’s portfolio. From the largest space solar cell manufacturing facility in the United States, SolAero Technologies, to Sinclair Interplanetary, a company specializing in star tracking and navigation systems, Rocket Lab suddenly became far more than just a rocket company. It became the owner of a supply chain that controls some of the most critical building blocks of the space industry.
Peter Beck understands the philosophy of power better than most. He doesn’t want to be the one digging for gold and exhausting himself in the mine. He wants to own the companies selling the shovels, picks, and boots to everyone rushing in to dig for it.
You can see that philosophy reflected in Rocket Lab’s revenue. A significant portion of the company’s business doesn’t come from launching rockets, but from selling space systems, components, and hardware, especially large orders for satellite components and systems from mysterious mega constellation customers whose identities remain undisclosed.
Even so, the cash flowing in from commercial customers is only the outer layer of Rocket Lab’s business empire. Behind that sits an even deeper source of demand: customers willing to pour enormous amounts of money into the company because they cannot afford to lose Rocket Lab as a supplier.
And right now, one of those customers is the U.S. military.
America’s national security infrastructure has become heavily dependent on Elon Musk. To ensure that the fate of the nation’s space capabilities is not tied to a single individual or a single company, Washington needs a trusted second source, and Rocket Lab has emerged as one of the companies being chosen for that role.
Rocket Lab first secured a contract worth more than $500 million to build communications satellites for the PWSA network. That was followed by another historic $816 million deal to build satellites for the Tracking Layer, essentially a network of orbital eyes designed to detect, track, and monitor high speed threats.
At that point, Rocket Lab was no longer simply a private space company. It was moving into the territory of national security infrastructure, backed by some of the most important contracts coming out of the U.S. government.
And this is where the paths of these two companies intersect on a much deeper philosophical level.
If Elon Musk’s ultimate vision is to build a modern day Noah’s Ark, to preserve humanity by taking civilization beyond Earth and eventually establishing a settlement on Mars, then Peter Beck and Rocket Lab represent almost the opposite direction.
They are not building technology to escape Earth.
They are building the foundations of an operating system in space, an infrastructure designed to protect, connect, and ultimately improve life here on Earth.
@ValueInIdeas Yeah, never sold. I just kick myself for not knowing much about investing back then. I was buying RKLB in small amounts $1 here, $3 there, $2 here instead of putting in a bigger amount at once. Even though RKLB was only around $5 back then which affected my average cost later.

@ValueInIdeas Yeah, exactly. On the chart, it looks like it barely dropped, but in reality, it was brutal. And then there was the lawsuit news against RKLB over the Neutron progress back then. We weren’t just holding and having an easy ride we’ve been through some really tough times too.
