📄 | 260416 | Motorsport Television Germany, which livestreamed the China GT Championship season opener with German commentary, published an article introducing Wang Yibo.
Who is Wang Yibo? Actor, singer, and race car driver – here's what you need to know!
Actor, singer, dancer, presenter, and racing driver – Wang Yibo is one of China's biggest and most versatile stars. While he is known internationally primarily for his entertainment career, he has increasingly made a name for himself in motorsport in recent years. This weekend marks the start of the 2026 China GT Championship in Shanghai – and Wang Yibo will once again be competing with the UNO Racing Team, this time not in an Audi, but in a Mercedes-AMG GT3 EVO.
Together with Malaysian racing driver Melvin Moh, he pilots the #85 car in the GT3 category, once again attracting significant attention far beyond the motorsport scene. Last year, the Chinese superstar impressively demonstrated at several GT events that he is more than just a prominent guest driver.
Before his motorsport career
Before entering the world of motorsports, Wang Yibo had already established himself as one of China's greatest entertainment talents. The Chinese-born actor is not only a singer, dancer, and presenter – a combination that makes him one of the most versatile stars of his generation.
He achieved his breakthrough primarily as an actor in Chinese TV productions and series, where he quickly gained immense popularity. His roles in particularly successful dramas made him a fixture of Chinese pop culture and earned him a huge fan base both at home and abroad.
Wang Yibo has also been active in music for years. His career began as a member of the boy band UNIQ, before he later focused more on solo projects. His songs and performances are characterized above all by strong dance choreography and a striking stage presence – an area in which he was already considered an outstanding performer at an early age.
Besides music and acting, his talent as a dancer is a central component of his career. Even before his breakthrough, he was internationally known for his skills in street dance and hip-hop. This dance foundation continues to shape his performances and his style as an entertainer.
In China, Wang Yibo has long been considered one of the so-called "all-round idols"—artists who are successful in several fields simultaneously and possess an enormous media reach. It is precisely this versatility that makes him so fascinating even outside of entertainment: from the TV set to the concert stage to the racing cockpit, he remains a star who constantly reinvents himself.
First steps in motorsport
Born on August 5, 1997, the Chinese rider officially began his racing career on January 1, 2019, when Wang Yibo joined the Yamaha China Racing Team and started his motorcycle racing career. He completed his first professional race in May of the same year at the Michelin GPGP Grand Prix in Beijing, but had to contend with technical problems.
In August 2019, a first major success followed: at the ZIC Motorbike Race on the Zhuhai International Circuit, he achieved second place in the race and also won the Rookie classification.
From motorcycle to GT3 racing machine
After his initial experiences on two wheels, Wang ventured into motorsport. Between October 19th and 20th, 2024, he made his debut in the GT3 category with the Audi R8 LMS GT3 EVO II in the GT Sprint Challenge China at the Zhuhai International Circuit – the predecessor of today's China GT Championship by Top Speed. Together with Adderly Fong in the UNO Racing Team, he drove the Audi R8 LMS GT3 EVO II straight to the podium: second place in the first race and even victory in the second.
This development continued in 2025. He demonstrated consistent performance at the pre-season test in Ningbo and at the season opener of the China GT Championship in Shanghai, securing a race win in the GT3 amateur category. Further appearances followed throughout the season, including the season finale and the 8-hour race in Shanghai.
Motorsport meets star power
Few drivers attract as many fans as Wang Yibo. His presence has regularly resulted in sold-out grandstands in Shanghai, where thousands of spectators come to the track specifically to see the star. For the series, this effect represents an enormous gain in attention and reach.
Wang Yibo is easily recognizable in the field, even visually: The striking green and black (occasionally dark blue/purple and black) Audi R8 LMS GT3 EVO II with starting number #85 has long since become his trademark. But this weekend there's a change: UNO Racing is fielding a Mercedes-AMG GT3 EVO for the first time. This one is also hard to miss – this time in a white livery with Red Bull sponsorship.
For the 2026 season, 25-year-old Wang Yibo will once again compete with UNO Racing, this time alongside Melvin Moh. The opening race in Shanghai could prove decisive, as the highly competitive field sets the stage for the title fight early in the season.
