Losing @BierGartenDC & @HStCountryClub basically w/in the same week is a huge blow and a sign the city needs to take seriously. Our block now has more closed biz than open. We all hung in there during one of the longest shut downs of any city &many of us aren’t out of the woods.
@halfbakedbykate I've meant to re-read it, and often thought about how my feelings would change towards it as an adult. I had so much angst as a teen and Plath channeled that perfectly. Her poetry is great too - I've read Ariel a bunch of times.
The latest episode of @MoveFeastPod is out and we've got @WhiskedDC founder Jenna Huntsberger joining us to share one of her favorite bakeries in DC, @PretzelBakery: https://t.co/gRdkKv8tQY
3 Stars Brewing announced it was closing last July, causing a wave of grief across D.C.’s brewery scene. But its death was also a loss for other local industries. Michael Stein has more on what the closure means for D.C.'s small businesses. https://t.co/JEW4mvs08M
@eliotwb I've seen a ton of out-of-town coffee shops come into the DC market expecting to "dominate," only to realize that DC is a difficult retail environment. High rents, low density. I'll miss the AdMo Philz, though - big loss for my neighborhood.
Small businesses should care more about profit. I'm tired of watching amazing folks killing it but still scraping by because they feel bad about raising prices.
Magazine feature I would LOVE to read: a look at the Bon Appetit Test Kitchen diaspora 18 months after they left and tried to make it on their own using YouTube and Patreon. Feels like an amazing tech + business + culture story
National election days are stark reminders of the injustice of the nearly 700,000 DC residents, who pay the same federal taxes as residents of states, having no voting representation in Congress and only limited, revocable local self-governing authority.
Excited to see SakuSaku Flakerie is over 20% of the way to funding with 26 days to go: https://t.co/hc1yuXbUVp Can you kick in a little? Any amount helps us potentially keep a great business and bakery right here in Cleveland Park. Makes our block a destination!
In today's final Best of D.C. drop, you’ll find readers’ picks for all things food related in the DMV. After all, what is D.C. if not a city of craft beer snobs, hot sauce connoisseurs, and self-proclaimed foodies looking for the next brunch spot? https://t.co/HYd5CseiXb
Julie and Julia was one of the books that inspired me to start a food blog, which is how I moved into food and eventually founded @whiskeddc. Really sad day - she was way too young.
I was shocked to learn this morning of the passing of Julie Powell, the original food blogger. Cooking through Julia Child's books, she made Child relevant to a new generation, and wrote about cooking in a fresh, conversational, this-is-my-real life tone that was rare back then.
