I have 3 people close to me who suffer from bipolar disorder.
One of them (a team member) tragically took his own life.
He was an extremely talented and normally quiet young man, trained as an accountant.
His symptoms in manic episodes were consistent with Ye’s. He would go on public anti-Semitic and racist rants on social media.
He would always emerge from these episodes with deep shame. Apologising to me, his friends, family and our team for his behaviour.
There was not a bad bone in his body.
One time I had to hunt him down in London in-person in the middle of the night to try to help save his life.
Anti-semitism is abhorrent and unacceptable.
But mental illness is extremely complex and if we don’t have a path for treating and helping people with disorders like bipolar - unfortunately will we have many more people take their own lives.
The UK govt should let Ye into the UK or it sends a very negative message to millions of people who suffer from similar conditions.
Rest in peace Alex - I know you have finally found the peace you were looking and I’m sorry the world could not provide it to you. ❤️
I think this Kanye West item is the perfect example of being able to have nuanced perspectives and sit with information. I can condemn his past actions (duh), call out a brand double standard and criticise central government. All truths are valid too
Denying a man entry to the UK who has never committed a crime because of a very public Mental Health breakdown is direct discrimination.
But obviously we live in a society with a Hierarchy of Discrimination.
White man with neurological disorder shouting slurs in public = Must be understood and forgiven, actually the truest victim of the situation
Black man with neurological disorder and mental illness having manic episodes on the internet = Must be punished to no end, irredeemable
Ye performed “CANT TELL ME NOTNING” to his sold out crowd at SoFi Stadium and was so impressed with the crowd, he ran it back 🔥
“yall loud as a motherf*cker tonight… we gotta run this back…” https://t.co/9GYnepAf8F
