In 1972, a 17-year-old Nigerian boy walked into an English First Division match and, within minutes, had the entire stadium chanting his name. He was only 11 when his family moved from Nigeria to England.

According to DRUM magazine:

▶️ Ade Coker was supposed to spend the afternoon on West Ham’s bench, watching established stars like Bobby Moore and Geoff Hurst run the show. But when Hurst got injured before kick-off, the teenager was suddenly thrown in as centre-forward.

▶️ More than 41,000 fans watched in disbelief as the unknown teenager from Nigeria tore through Crystal Palace’s defence with confidence far beyond his age.

▶️ Seven minutes into his top-flight debut, Coker announced himself with a stunning arched shot that left the goalkeeper frozen. The goal opened the floodgates as West Ham cruised to a 3–0 win, a victory journalists credited largely to the electric performance of the young Nigerian.

▶️ Sports writers were instantly obsessed. Some compared his style to Pelé, while others described his movement as “pure football science fiction.”

▶️ One writer said there was no way anyone could ignore the talent and boldness of a 17-year-old playing like a seasoned professional.

▶️ Years later, Ade Coker moved to the North American Soccer League where he played for many clubs, and the United States national team, before retiring in the late 1980s.
