The best time to start was yesterday. The second best is now.
Kenya-South Africa trade ties are strong and growing, but much still needs to be done and many opportunities and potential remain unlocked.
The agreements we signed today will help us harmonise regulations and standards, foster regional and continental integration, improve infrastructure, and revitalise value chains, among other critical interventions.
South Africa is a financial and manufacturing powerhouse in the Southern Africa region while Kenya is the gateway to East and Central Africa. That complementarity represents massive opportunities for business.
We have also resolved to leverage on regional platforms like the East African Community, Southern African Development Community and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa as well as continental initiatives such as the African Continental Free Trade Area to deliver accelerated economic growth.
Alongside President Cyril Ramaphosa, addressed the Kenya-South Africa Joint Business Forum in Midrand, Johannesburg. Encouraged by the readiness of many companies to expand across borders.
Today, I joined H.E. President @WilliamsRuto ๐ฐ๐ช and H.E. President @CyrilRamaphosa ๐ฟ๐ฆ at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, South Africa, for the signing of several bilateral agreements aimed at strengthening cooperation between Kenya and South Africa.
Among the key milestones was the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on Shipping and Maritime that will enhance collaboration in maritime safety and security, port development and management, maritime education and training, research and innovation as well as recognition of seafarers certificate of competency.
These agreements reflect our shared commitment to deepening economic ties, expanding trade opportunities, creating jobs, and advancing regional integration for the prosperity of our people.
Kenya and South Africa continue to strengthen a partnership founded on mutual respect, shared aspirations, and a common vision for a prosperous Africa.
President @WilliamsRuto has proven wrong those previous leaders who treated the region as a no go zone. He has demonstrated through action that the people of Nep region are an integral part of the nation and deserve equal government attention and development.
With President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa, witnessed the signing of six trade agreements between Kenya and South Africa at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, a clear testament to our commitment to deepening bilateral ties.
The new agreements cover shipping and maritime, gender equality and empowerment, technical and vocational training, arts, culture and heritage, and sports and recreation.
These agreements are aimed at elevating our partnership, building on the existing strong foundation of cooperation we have nurtured over the past three decades.
We are also positioning ourselves to unlock greater trade opportunities through the African Continental Free Trade Area, expand markets, boost investment, and drive inclusive growth.
Historical fact:
Mogadishu was destroyed 35 years ago because politicians who claimed to represent the people refused to resolve their differences through dialogue.
After 35 years of bloodshed, have no lessons been learned?
Hon. @missyHaroona is not a guest in Wajirโshe is our daughter. She came forr Madaraka Day, went straight to Wajir High School, the place that shaped her journey. Wajirians proudly honor her and her father's legacy in education. Karibu tena Hon Umi, Wajir will always be home.
Wajir County made history as the first region in Northern Kenya to host the national Madaraka Day celebrations, bringing the nation together in a powerful affirmation of inclusion and equitable development.
Led by H.E. President @WilliamsRuto, we joined residents in commemorating the 63rd Madaraka Day under the theme, 'Education, Skills and the Future.'
In his address, the President reaffirmed the Government's commitment to ensuring that every region shares in the country's development and prosperity.
As part of the celebrations, we also witnessed as the President presided over the official commissioning of Wajir's new ultra-modern Level 5 referral hospital.
Equipped with a comprehensive emergency centre, three operating theatres, HDU and ICU facilities and a 96-bed ward, the hospital will significantly strengthen access to quality healthcare across the region.
The celebrations were held at the newly constructed Wajir Stadium, which the President announced will be renamed Ahmed Khalif Wajir Stadium in recognition of the county's heritage and the wishes of its people.
The President further outlined key development initiatives for the region, including the construction of a civilian terminal at Wajir International Airport and the establishment of Wajir University, the first in the County and second in the region after Garissa University, a move that will expand access to higher education and unlock new economic opportunities in Northern Kenya.
โ I congratulate H.E President William Samoei Ruto and Governor Ahmed Abdulahi for co-hosting the 63rd Madaraka Day celebrarions in Wajir County. Our country is witnessing the dream of our forefathers being achieved in unity and splendor.
The ODM Party supports equitable national development , inclusion and shared prosperity. TUKO TAYARI.
WAJIR TOWN, KENYA
MONDAY, JUNE 1, 2026
The Kenya Kwanza Administrationโs agenda of inclusivity and equality is well and truly underway as the Country marks the 63rd Madaraka Day in Wajir County.
Over the last 63 years, we have made significant progress as a nation and implemented transformative development initiatives that have strengthened unity and advanced progress across Kenya.
By abolishing the discriminatory vetting procedures that residents of North Eastern Region and other border Counties were subjected to, hindering their acquisition of national identity cards, passports and other vital citizenship documents, the government under the stewardship of President William Ruto is correcting and resolving historical grievances, marginalization and discrimination in pursuit of a united, cohesive and prosperous Kenya.
Never again will citizens of our republic be subjected to discrimination based on religion, ethnicity, or place of origin.
To ensure the dignity of all Kenyans and access to opportunities, the Government is equitably implementing development projects across the country.
The 750km 100 billion shillings Mandera-Rhamu-Gare-Elwak-Kobo-Kotulo-Tarbaj-Wajir-Samatar-Habaswein-Modogashe-Kula Mawe-Isiolo Road whose construction is at an advanced stage is a critical infrastructure project that will greatly enhance connectivity and economic opportunities in the Northern Kenya Region.
Joined President Ruto at the newly constructed Wajir Stadium as he led the nation in marking the 63rd Madaraka Day, the first time such national celebrations were hosted in North Eastern Region.
On infrastructure, the 750km Northern Kenya Gateway Corridor linking Isiolo, Wajir, and Mandera counties is progressing well. This transformative project costs KSh100 billion and will enhance connectivity and unlock economic opportunities in the region.
We are also establishing the KSh5 billion County Livestock Investment Company, which will support more than 350,000 pastoralists in 21 arid and semi-arid counties to establish and own livestock enterprises, enabling communities to derive greater value from livestock and participate more meaningfully in the economy.
These are some of the many initiatives underway in Northern Kenya. No part of Kenya should ever be left behind because of geography, history, or politics.
In education, we have established Wajir, Kotulo, and Mandera teacher training colleges to complement Garissa Teacher Training College.
More than 4,600 young teacher trainees from this region are currently enrolled, building the human capital necessary to transform the future of Northern Kenya.
We have also directed the Ministry of Education to develop a framework for integrating Duksi, Madrassa, and the Programme for Pastoral Instruction into our national education system, ensuring that learning pathways reflect the realities and aspirations of local communities.
The #63rdMadaraDay in Wajir was epic.
Happy & patriotic people of Wajir are happy to have hosted this big national event.
President Ruto's administration is committed to dignifying all Kenyans, especially those who have been historically marginalised by previous administrations
Mzee Jomo Kenyatta ruled Kenya for 15 years and never visited Wajir or much of the North Eastern region.
President Daniel arap Moi served for 24 years and visited Wajir approximately 10 times.
President Mwai Kibaki was in office for 10 years and visited Wajir only once, without covering all parts of the North Eastern region.
President Uhuru Kenyatta served for 10 years and visited Wajir twice, but many residents felt the region did not receive significant development projects.
In just three years, President William Ruto has visited Wajir five times and toured all counties in the North Eastern region. His visits have been accompanied by major development projects, including the construction of Wajir Stadium, drilling of water boreholes, and investments in education.
Most notably, President Ruto is the first Kenyan Head of State to bring a national celebration, Madaraka Day, to the North Eastern region.
Given these developments, one may ask: where do people find the energy to continually oppose William Ruto?
Kenya has had 5 presidents since independence in 1963, but it's the first time a President is spending the night within the Northern Frontier District that comprises Mandera, Wajir and Garissa counties.
"When youโre accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression."
Welcome to Wajir County.
Karibuni Kaunti ya Wajir.
Ku soo dhowaaw Ismaamulka Wajeer.
Proud host of the 2026 Madaraka Day National Celebrations ๐ฐ๐ช.
A proud moment.
God bless our country.
Thank you His Excellency @WilliamsRuto for making Northern Kenya shine!
Seeing our children perform was just an emotional moment.
Today, I am a proud Edo from the great North Eastern region!
Thank you, the people of Wajir! NEP is proud, and you have made us all proud.
Edo Udgoon has a teary smile today!
Dowlada dariska barakoowa!
A win for any county within NEP is a win for us all. When one county rises, we all rise together. Today, we celebrate Wajirโs achievement as a shared victory for the entire North Eastern region.
Congratulations to everyone who made this moment possible.
Happy Madaraka day, fellow Kenyans!
Under our affirmative action programme for Northern Kenya, we are investing KSh8.4 billion to connect more than 53,300 households to electricity, advancing our commitment to inclusive development and ensuring that no part of our country is left behind.
In Wajir South Constituency, commissioned the Habaswein Solar PV- BESS-Diesel Hybrid Power Plant, a KSh639 million investment that will provide reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity to more than 8,565 households, transforming livelihoods and unlocking new economic opportunities for the community.
