Lavrov on Iran: In Iran, completely out of the blue, in June 2025, the United States and Israel bombed the country in the midst of negotiations. The talks were under way; they finished in the evening and agreed to meet again in the morning – and in between, they bombed them. The war lasted 12 days. Then there were the strikes on February 28 this year. Now the Americans say they are demanding that Iran open the Strait of Hormuz. The Islamic Republic of Iran says that, in return, the sanctions must be eased or lifted. And they will keep pressing for that.

But the most interesting thing is that the Strait of Hormuz was completely open until February 28. Following this aggression, Iran demonstrated that it, too, has its own national interests, national pride and traditions. The history of Persia goes back more than a thousand years.

Now, if the Strait of Hormuz is to be reopened, they are discussing a fee for passage. There was no such fee until the United States and Israel launched this reckless attack. Incidentally, we do not want a fee to be introduced either, but that is a matter for further discussions.

One of the consequences of the aggression against Iran is that the position of those in the Iranian leadership who had warned that, without nuclear weapons, Iran would be constantly pressured has been greatly strengthened. These views were marginal under Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, both of whom were killed.

Now US President Donald Trump says they want to talk to the Iranians, but there is no one there to talk to; he doesn’t know anyone. They killed everyone there. What is that supposed to mean?

Alex Krainer (@NakedHedgie) on Trump’s war against Iran: it does not matter who Americans vote for. The system prevails. Trump did not invent these policies. He inherited them. The rest of the world has now understood that the Atlanticist system cannot be reformed at the ballot box.

And that, I think, gives a very, very strong impetus to the emerging multipolar world to move away from that even more quickly.

What we see now at the SCO summit is very explicit denunciations of this system. They seem a lot more confident and determined that they have to break the bridges with the system, that they have to start developing their own systems of trade, trade settlement systems, reserve currency systems—gold, commodities, whatever—and that they have to make certain commitments to this. You can’t hope to deal with the United States and NATO countries hoping that somehow they’ll be nice to you, and that you can just continue business as usual and sit on two chairs.

I think that Trump’s war against Iran has shown that you really have to choose sides. And I think that this is becoming increasingly clear to the nations of the Global South—to Russia, China, Belarus, Iran, Arab states and so forth—and that they are acting accordingly. We will see a much more determined effort to create alternatives: alternative trade routes, alternative payment systems, alternative clearing systems, reserve currencies, and definitely a new security architecture for the Eurasian continent. That is now definitely coming into shape.”

The war confirmed the policy. Eurasia is building the exits: routes, settlement, and a security architecture the dollar does not own.
