Saw the Hockney joiner shot of his mother at the Bradford museum when I was a student. Blew me away. Just total innovation. He was how Englishmen should be. Pugnacious, clever, total individual.
@NickBurns Final
Semifinal - half final
Quartos de final - fourths of final
Oitavos de final - eights of final
Desasseisavos de final - sixteenths of final
Trintaedoisavos de final - thirtytwoths of final
Sessentaequatroavos de final - sixtyfourths of final
And so on
@NickBurns They are called ”șaisprezecimi de finală” in Romanian. We would have a problem at 64 though, as we don't have a dedicated word for 1/32. We could maybe say it as "a trei zeci și doua parte de finală” for a single match (the 32nd part of the final), but it won't work for plural.
@NickBurns "Sechzehntelfinale" in German still sounds normal.
"Zweiunddreißigstelfinale" (round of 64) starts sounding weird but it's on the border and I've seen uses of it.
The English language taps out at "quarterfinals" and we have to resort to the weasel phrase "round of 16," while Spanish goes for the elegant "octavos de final." But FIFA with its boundless greed and its round of 32 has defeated the capability of any language to keep up
@NickBurns we don't know no limits.
treintaidosavos de final.
sesenticuatroavos de final.
cientiveintiochoavos de final.
fractional numericals in spanish have no limit.
cardinal numericals in spanish have no limit.
the limit is in your soul, whether you are primero or quincuagésimo segundo.

Qatar v Switzerland is the World Cup’s only group-stage match where one country’s highest point is lower than the other country’s lowest point.
Qatar tops out at just 103m. Switzerland bottoms out at Lake Maggiore, ~193m.

The idea that this Big Boy was rotting in a parking lot in Pomona, CA for six decades until Union Pacific rebuilt every component to get it working again is actually awe inspiring.
