“He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good.” My dad was good to all, saw the good in all, and was always truthful which mirrors the sun. The sun doesn’t chose who it warms, it just does its thing. St. Francis of Assisi in Canticle of the Creatures praises Brother Sun as the most excellent image of God. Francis saw in the sun's steady, unpretentious giving a call to humility. Without a humble sun, there would be fire. It doesn't boast of its power, it just does its work, day after day, sustaining without seeking thanks. Hiddenness of holiness. True light. Simply present, allowing things to be seen clearly. No spotlight. No pedestals. No reserved seating. Like the sun behind the clouds, that Is my dad. God wanted him to stand tall at sunset and fly free.

Hello? Hello. I’m still here. Every day, here, with you on X as my hidden (like❤️) stats would back up. I may have only posted on two other platforms since Christmas 2022, but it’s just photos. A lot of photos. And yet, perhaps just a glimpse. Now for some words….a lot of words, and yet only a glimpse. Here, because my dad @sullyvegas loved X and all that it stands for.

March 3, 2026. God wanted my dad to stand tall at sunset and fly free. I believe his final heartbeat was 42 minutes after this photo. At least that is what the numbers suggest. On paper it was 6:49. God is in the details. And: Nobody valued the details more than my dad. (If you know me, yes, it’s totally his fault.) My dad is with us everywhere now, running marathons again, and going before us for the best seat in the house.

My mom asked why he married her 52-years ago: "because you are nice." My mom added that morning, "fooled him." My mom and dad retired and left Vegas for Philly when Bella was born. (I can hear you, still: WHO RETIRES AND LEAVES VEGAS. That’s just who my parents are.) Package deal to return home six years ago. One or two things may have happened in that span.

He watched a lot of bad reporting, bad television. Never missed a play, never missed a report. Not just in our orbit. He saw everything, always. He made notes for me to study, observe, learn and unlearn. His organization was insane. Forever a step ahead, carefully and complete. It was as if he could see the future. Truly. He always did the right thing and that's what matters in our book. Went through hell and high water and lived with grace and true strength. He would arise every morning with the cleanest slate for all. Gratitude at sunrise and hope, peace, at sunset. That’s how he lived. Above all, my dad taught me through action, how to forgive. A week ago, I asked how he did it. Now here’s the tricky part as I heard him say “one-on-one” which could have also been “one by one.” Either way, it’s them vs God. This from a man who fought harder than anyone I know outside of my mom. But that other stuff is not his fight. Any fool can know, they say, we shall endeavor to understand. He was simple. He was quick. The quickest. Careful. Gentle. The strongest. Loyal. Wise. Solved every problem like it was a riddle. Rarely used punctuation to keep us all on our toes. Loved to help people laugh, help people smile, just like Bella. He never gave up on me. I will cherish all our conversations. There was this one conversation, 4+ years ago. I didn’t want to hear the answer but finally, one week (to the T) from his final breath, I asked what he meant. “See what?”

What struck me is the whisper we have all heard…whether a king or a faithful servant, you can’t take it with you, earthly glory. My dad left with nothing but a scapular I found surely with the guidance of St. Anthony of Padua one minute before the high noon bells of the church closed the shop. Yet. My dad left this world with everything. Nothing and everything is the same if formulated by truth.

So much to say and yet perhaps silence is indeed golden. Whatever. One quick note. Strawberries. My dad had strawberries every day since his last visit to the hospital in October. Not just a select few. A glorious carton a day. The last time he physically walked on the Earth was July. My mom never left his side at home these four months. Back to the strawberries. It was fun for me to hunt for them daily. Until it wasn’t. That’s on me. It all is. Anyhow. The strawberries!!!! You guys know this but fruit is a metaphor for good works. Vocation, being a good person, a child of God. Strawberries stand for perfect righteousness, purity, virtue, divine love and devotion in their heart shape, the 3 part leaves are seen as the Trinity, often appear around the feet of Our Lady of Grace, paradise-like goodness.

There was a purpose in everything my dad ever did or said, and in this case, his chosen nourishment to the untrained eye. The best way to serve Him is to pay close attention to His words. That is the priority. The strawberries, will pass away with the rest of this world. His words will never pass away. My dad understood what is real and true, underneath the sugar.

His nurse, Rachel. Now an eternal friend of the family. She is the blessing of all blessings and would come to our home armed with consistency and courage and everything good under the sun. I always stood back. But nothing went unnoticed. She would say hello to my dad the same way even as the circumstances changed. A reflection of how God’s promises remain constant.

Father Vic was with the five of us just an hour before my dad stood tall at the sunset. Well, six, our cat Airabella never left his side. My dad called the cat Lucy, btw. Bella named her Airabella. While you’re here, did you know that tabby cats have an M on their forehead as a blessing from Mary? On the night Jesus was born, a tabby cat helped calm Him. Mary marked his forehead with M as a sign of gratitude. St. Francis of Assisi was also there leading the way as we pray every day. I guided Bella to show Father Vic the bunnies and birds in the backyard. What I failed to include in this first version was how Father Vic asked about coyotes. I may have pointed out the bunnies and birds but it was Father Vic who saw the whole picture. He asked, “and coyotes?” I responded, “they all work together.” My mom then immediately said, “well the bunnies are quite fast.” Bella went on to say later, “and the birds fly high.” That’s just what the Sullivans do. Endless examples of such. Limitless love. The first words we witnessed from Father Vic in the spring of 2021: “God is good all the time…all the time, God is good.” Darkness is the absence of light, evil is the absence of good, cold is the absence of heat. “Listen to the birds,” my dad would remind me since I was Isabella’s age. Remember that 4+ year old conversation I mentioned? I finally had started to listen at that point in time and l will never stop listening. That is prayer. True power. “Happy that I am here to see it.” The key through it all? Maybe. Maybe not. I know, dad.

Why golf? “Why not.” Pope John Paul viewed sports as a school of human virtue. He’s not the only one. My dad loved, understood and respected all sports and showed me the way. No coincidences of course as the Golf Channel was on the tv in his bedroom for his final three hours. No sound. A silent broadcast without applause, praise or blame. Funny, he would once mute reporters he didn’t find useful. My mission as a sports broadcaster many moons ago was for my dad to never mute my report. How silly was I. The sound of silence, wins. Above the noise, it was as though God whispered: “I am here. I have been walking the course with you all along. Now rest in Me.” The last hole is never the end. The Bible portrays life as a course we are given to walk with perseverance. St. Paul at the end of his own life wrote, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness…” I was praying all this time for a miraculous recovery shot, and it was as if the Lord said to my dad - well played, good and faithful servant. The round is finished. Come home to the eternal clubhouse where the course is perfect, the hazards are gone, and every shot is pure joy. Golf was one of the places my dad met beauty, patience, humility, and friendship with creation. At the finish….it was the green, the sky, the game….now perfectly, peacefully, at rest. A celebration in its purest form.
