For the TL;DR
This was a domestic issue (they were in a relationship) and the court withheld from the jury that the "little woman" the defendant was scared of was actually a 6 foot 300lb man which 100% would have biased them in a case based on threat assessment.

They were judging him based on how scared a man would be against an average woman in a domestic issue.
