Any tropical system can produce tornadoes! We're familiar with that here as many of our tropical systems have produced significant tornado threats, like Isaias in 2020. They're often short-lived, but they can produce enhanced areas of damage in the rain bands. #HurricanePrepared
During a storm, know what to expect. Remain vigilant, stay up-to-date with the forecast & listen to officials. Have Wireless Emergency Alerts enabled on your phone to get warnings & other alerts. Even small changes in the storm’s track can make a big difference #HurricanePrepared
Inland flooding is a very deadly hurricane threat. Most tropical deaths over the past 30 years have been from flooding, many due to driving through flooded areas. Also, the amount of rain a tropical system produces is not related to the intensity of the wind. #HurricanePrepared
When a storm is forecast for your area, take action immediately. Having supplies & an evac plan should already be done. There are also short-term actions to help protect your property: boarding up windows, securing loose outdoor items & doors & moving cars. #HurricanePreparedness
Even tropical storm force winds can toss around debris & cause damage. They also hit hours ahead of the hurricane’s center. You should seek shelter from the wind in a sturdy building as the hurricane moves inland, before the onset of tropical storm force winds. #HurricanePrepared
Our products can tell you a lot about what's expected with a storm, including surge, rainfall & wind speeds. There's a lot of info out there & it's important to know what it means. Please rely on official forecasts & trustworthy partners for the latest info. #HurricanePrepared
Today starts National Hurricane Preparedness Week, so let's review the hazards they create here locally, as well as learn how to prepare your home & family. Hurricanes are not just a coastal problem; impacts from wind & water can be felt hundreds of miles inland. Know your risk!
One of the greatest threats to life in a hurricane is from storm surge (water pushed onshore by the force of winds). This advancing surge combines with the normal tides to create the storm tide, which can impact roads, homes & other critical infrastructure. #HurricanePrepared
Our Spring SKYWARN training classes continue, with 2 more classes this week and another next week. Register for one of these FREE weather training classes now. More details at https://t.co/GV4lQDAGDo #vawx#ncwx
