I was the only Black person and the only man on my kids' PTA board.

Nobody asked me to join. I showed up.

Ran it like a company. Applied the same discipline I use at work. Learned more about nonprofits in that room than in any boardroom.

That PTA experience shaped how I run the MT Scholarships today.

Leadership is not about titles. It is about showing up where nobody expects you and doing the work nobody asked you to do.

My first graduate school applications in 2006 all failed.

Every. Single. One.

So I expanded from 4 schools to 7. Changed recommenders. Wrote cold emails to professors I had never met. Applied to schools in Canada.

The lesson was not about resilience. It was about strategy.

Same effort. Different approach. Different result.

When the door does not open, you do not knock harder. You find a different door.

My first day on campus, the graduate school coordinator looked at me and warned me about bribery.

Because I am Nigerian.

I passed my PhD qualifying exams in my first semester. The department turned around and offered two more scholarships to Nigerian students.

Five years after graduation, they invited me back to speak.

That speech became the book.

The people who doubt you first are often the first to celebrate you. Let them. But never forget the doubt. It is fuel.
