Wild Monkton this term consisted of lots of collaborative, mixed year group outdoor activities. Mini stick teepee villages were built, intricate tree rubbings produced and clay models sculpted which were inspired by our surroundings.
Year 2 had a fantastic time during Expedition Day at Bowood House. They discovered Bowood's own enchanted garden, explored some of the house, attended a seed identification workshop and then finished at the Adventure playground!
Books at Bedtime was a fantastic introduction to the Upper School Library for Year 2. Riveting books were listened too, hot chocolate sipped and questions for Librarian Mrs Culwick answered. A great evening! https://t.co/BsmKz5buLe
In Adventure Education the children were making tent pegs. Sticks were collected, knives were used to whittle the wood and then the pegs were used to make a shelter!
In Year 2 we have been completing some instructional writing on how to make pumpkin soup. We included imperative verbs galore! 'Cut', 'Blend' and 'Sprinkle.' After writing out the instructions we helped to make the soup then had a taste of it with lunch. Yum!
As a reward for working hard, displaying kindness towards their classmates and having an amazing enthusiasm for learning Year 2 had a Movie Afternoon! Shoes were taken off, beanbags were taken out, popcorn was munched and a film about meatballs was enjoyed! Well done Year 2!!
As part of the Literature Festival Year 2 went to watch illustrator Dapo Adeola read his book 'Speak Up!' The message was all about speaking up for what is right. We then had a masterclass from him where we all joined in drawing a character from the book.
Today we have been counting up in 3's and all agreed it's slightly trickier than 2's, 5's and 10's. We decided to use different strategies like number lines, beads and even dice to show how to count in 3's. We then made videos and shared them with the class.
During Innovate we were looking at the Digestive System. Here you can see the stomach muscles working hard, squelching the food down. Acid (Orange Juice) and Saliva (water!) were added to help with the process! Next stop the intestines where is gets particularly yucky!
Our first Adventure Education session involved lots of team games where collaboration and communication were key! The children had to navigate themselves into alphabetical order along a white line and make complex shapes using coloured balls and rope!
Today we went on a Number Hunt! Our chosen number was '30' and we had to find all the numbers that were 'less than' and 'greater than' that number. It took us all around the school. We also found the 'equal to' number 30! It was hiding behind the bin!
Today in English we were looking out of our 'Monkton Window,' listening to the sounds and appreciating the sights. Wonderful expanded noun phrases and alliteration were used including 'bumpy, rooty trees' and 'glistening, green grass.'
What better way to start Year 2 than a self-portrait! We used mirrors to study our features and then used watercolours to paint ourselves. The self-portraits will be used for our Birthday Wall.
For Expedition Day, Year 2 went to the beautiful Dyrham Park. Our Innovate topic is Enchanted Gardens so we took lots of pictures and made many observations about all the intricate gardens on display. We were inspired to design our own garden when we got back to the classroom!
Taking inspiration from the story, Fatou Fetch the Water, Year 2 designed and then made their inventions to purify water. There was lots of trial and error and the results were mostly clean water! #WildMonkton
Today was the Year 2 All Dressed Up fashion show. After designing and then making their costumes the children then had the opportunity to display their creations on the catwalk. There were plenty of natural performers in the class!
We were combining verbs and adverbs today and acting them out. The children were 'building carefully', 'swimming slowly' and even 'grooving enthusiastically!'
As part of our Innovate topic on Egypt we visited the Bristol Museum. We took part in an Egyptian workshop, identifying objects from the past and discussing their uses. The Egyptians had some very unusual pillows!!
In preparation for some Easter Story writing we decided to act out the story, incorporating as much detail as possible. Narrators were used to add clarity to the story with expanded noun phrases and time sentence starters used.
As part of our Innovate topic we were looking at Egyptian spices. We imagined we were in an Egyptian market and thought about all of the sights and sounds that we would hear! Some of us were even brave enough to try some of the spices. As hot as the Sahara Desert springs to mind!
