As the World Cup returns, I find myself thinking about Mehran Samak.

27 years old. Killed after celebrating on the night of Iran’s loss to the United States in 2022.

Not because he was armed. Not because he attacked anyone. Because he honked his car horn.

What stays with me most is what came after.

His brother spent the night driving around with Mehran’s body, terrified it would be taken before the family could bury him.

My heart breaks for my people.
