There's no arrest warrant for a credit card bill, and Interpol doesn't give a fuck about your Chase card

A guy I grew up with has been in Canggu since 2023 on $212,000 of the banks' money. Everything they've done to him in 3 years fits in a shoebox at his mom's house

I've seen the shoebox

He opened a gym on business credit cards. The gym died in 11 months. He sold the equipment, bought a one way ticket and stopped answering his phone

This is what the banks can do:

1. Call you. Your US number is dead and you're on an Indonesian SIM

2. Mail you. His all go to his mom's house. That's the shoebox

3. Wreck your credit. Every card goes 30, 60, 90 days late, then charges off around month 6. He's at a 440. The guy renting him a villa has never heard of Experian

4. Sell the debt. Collectors buy it for about 4 cents on the dollar and start over at step 1

5. Sue you. In a US civil court. You don't show up and they win by default. That lets them garnish US paychecks and empty US bank accounts. He has neither

6. Send a 1099-C. Cancelled debt counts as income, so the IRS gets a letter too

What they can't do:

1. Have you arrested. America got rid of debtors' prison in 1833

2. Take your passport over a credit card

3. Freeze money that's sitting outside the US

4. Collect in Indonesia. There's no treaty that makes a Bali court enforce a US money judgment. They'd have to sue you all over again, in Indonesian, over a Chase bill

But here's where it gets slightly illegal

Technically, if you take out a loan knowing you're not going to pay it back, that's bank fraud

But it's extremely hard to prove you got the loan with the intention of not paying it back. The guys who get charged are the ones who texted somebody the plan

And his judgments wait for him. They last 10 to 20 years in most states and the bank can renew them. The day he moves home and gets a paycheck, they're sitting there

"first you have to qualify for a huge loan"

He never talked to a loan officer. A 700 credit score and an LLC got him $212,000 across 6 banks in one morning. Business credit cards. No collateral, no tax returns, 0% for the first year

His mom still texts him a photo every time a new letter shows up. He sends back a picture of the beach lmfaooo
