And if your country somehow escapes that list but sits in the New World, there is a good chance your own society was built through conquest and settlement of somebody else’s homeland.

Jews, meanwhile, are a people whose history, religion, language, archaeology, and ancestry all originate in Judea.

So spare us the lectures about the supposed moral stain of Jews establishing a state there 80 years ago. Much of the world had just murdered them, helped murder them, abandoned them, shut its doors to them, or fought to prevent them from having a country of their own. And many of the people now shouting “colonizer” live on continents colonized far more recently by their own societies.

On This Day — August 5, 1391

A century before the expulsion, Barcelona’s Jews were massacred in an orgy of violence that lasted nearly a week.

News had just arrived that the Jews of Mallorca had been slaughtered. Within hours, a mob of local sailors, laborers, peasants, and about 50 Castilians set fire to the wooden gates of the Jewish Call near what is now Plaça de Sant Jaume.

They looted Jewish houses.
They dragged Jewish families into the streets.
They were given a choice: convert or die. 100 who refused conversion were murdered on the spot while the survivors fled to the Castell Nou. Two days later, the mob managed to storm the fortress and murder another 300 Barcelona Jews. After that, many others finally accepted baptism under the threat of certain death.

One of the great Jewish communities of Spain was effectively erased and never recovered. In total, the 1391 riots saw Spain’s Jewish population reduced by one-third and set the road to the Inquisition and the 1492 expulsion.

Spain today lectures Israel on morality while Jews are again chased through its streets and conspiracy theories blaming the Jewish state for a migrant crisis in Ceuta spread with official indulgence. Some countries have a talent for forgetting their own history while demanding the world remember everyone else’s.

אחד האירועים המשמעותיים ביותר שהתרחשו מאז שהתחילה מחאת השמאל (בערך בתקופת ההפגנות בפתח תקווה ואחר כך במעבר לבלפור) - שהתגלגלה בשנה שלפני השביעי באוקטובר למרד ובגידה בהיקף מלא - היה הנרמול של השנאה. מילים שקודם לכן נאמרו בחדרי חדרים, בלחישה, ברמיזות, בסלונים סגורים, התחילו לחלחל לפרהסיה הציבורית.

השמאל הישראלי התמכר להפגנות, וההפגנות הגבירו את השינאה, ששינתה את אופי ההפגנות והפכה אותן לאלימות יותר, ואת תוכן הנאומים שנישא בהן לגס יותר, שונא יותר, גזעני יותר, אנטי-ציוני יותר. השינאה התחילה לעטוף את כל ההוויה של השמאל הציוני וחדרה לסדקים ולחריצים הדקים ביותר, עד שהפכה להיות המגדיר האידאולוגי היחיד שעל פיו נשפטת המציאות ומעשיהם שם אנשים.

הם קמו לשינאה בבוקר, נשמו אותה במהלך היום והלכו לישון איתה בלילה. השינאה הרחיקה אותם מהיכולת לדבר עם נשואי שינאתם, בערך רוב העם היהודי במדינת ישראל, ואובדן היכולת לדבר, סגר אותם בתוך תיבת תהודה ״בטוחה״ ששום דבר לא חודר אותה. בתוך התיבה הזו שיח השינאה עבר תהליך של התאבכות בונה, וחיזק את עצמו, כי ממילא אין מי שמעז לקרוא תגר.

כך הגענו למצב שנציגי המחנה הזה מהדהדים בגאווה גזענות זואולוגית, שהיתה אחד המרכיבים המרכזיים באידיאולוגיה הנאצית. אחרי מלחמת העולם השניה, המערב ניסה לעשות הכל כדי שסוג הגזענות הזה לא יחזור על עצמו לעולם. אבל האירוניה של ההיסטוריה יכולה להיות אכזרית מאוד. בסוף, צאצאי הקורבנות של הנאצים, הם אלה שמפיחים שוב חיים בגזענות הזואולוגית מבית מדרשו של גבלס.

עם הקבוצה הזו לא תהיה פשרה ולא יהיה שיח. זו קבוצה שאיבדה את דרכה וזקוקה לתיקון עמוק מאוד.
