Okay I’ve done some research on the most legally binding way to buy land on the Moon and the lore is insane.

It all traces to one man: Dennis Hope and his Lunar Embassy.

In 1980 he spotted what a lot of people still call the only real loophole in the 1967 Outer Space Treaty.

The treaty clearly says nations can’t claim or appropriate the Moon… but it never mentions private individuals. So Hope walked into a California county office, filed a formal claim for the entire lunar surface (plus most other planets), mailed notices to the UN, the US government, and the Soviets, and when nobody objected he declared ownership.

He’s been selling 1-acre plots ever since, with official deeds, coordinates, and mineral rights. People basically treat him as the only guy who ever properly claimed and can therefore legally sell lunar land under that reading of the treaty.
