To everyone who has spent their life being expected to be someone they're not.
You may have experienced people becoming uncomfortable when you opened up about who you are, or being pressured to stay silent instead.
If you don't speak up, you're treated as if you don't exist. But if you keep pretending to be someone you're not, little by little, it begins to wear away at your sense of self.
The truth is, that kind of pain can only be fully understood by those who have lived through it. For those who haven't, it can be difficult even to imagine.
That's why I want to use my creative work to create a space where both I and the people who have supported me can be ourselves freely.
Let's keep moving forward together.
I do get that a lot of artists don’t like their work being used without permission no matter what.
That being said though, I’d be really happy if someone wanted to use my art as their pfp. Only 2 rules: I should be credited, and it can’t be art of my sona
one thing i never understood about artists online is getting mad when people use their art as their pfp. whenever i catch somebody with something i made as their pfp i get really happy
I used to think I should reject the "draw for yourself" advice because I assumed it was just bad advice for hopefuls, and maybe it is, but surely it has some merit if most professionals/top freelancers say it?
Honestly for a while I thought I could become a content machine, but now I know I can't do that. Not for a long period of time. So hearing that drawing for myself is more sustainable and better in the long term is actually really comforting.
No shade, truly, but a lot of you only want to draw for the sake of attention.
You don’t like to be told to “draw for yourself” because you have no connection to art beyond the potential social capital it has. Art is not content.
I had to do a lot of exploration of traditional media and artmaking methods in college, and I think this all just made me love the freedom and ease digital art gives me even more. I never want to touch charcoal ever again
@kianamosser Yeah! I think this goes for any other time people compare someone's art to something they like too. It hasn't happened to me recently , but if it did I would be happy I reminded someone of something they like
