The real question is not whether reserves matter, but how effectively macroeconomic gains are being translated into improvements in the lives of ordinary citizens.
They are not. Foreign reserves are not food, but they help stabilise the currency, support imports, moderate inflation, and provide a buffer against economic shocks, all of which affect the cost and availability of food.

Ms. Sheila S. Mudenda, the Statistician General of the Zambia Statistics Agency, has unveiled the June 2026 Monthly Dissemination, reporting a powerful acceleration in the national economy. Zambiaโs GDP at purchasersโ prices soared to K191,385 Mn in the first quarter of 2026, a substantial increase from the K153,882 Mn recorded in the corresponding quarter of 2025. This translates to a real GDP growth of 7.7%, marking a significant 3.2 percentage point acceleration from the 4.5% growth recorded in Q1 2025. This surge was primarily fueled by explosive growth in Agriculture, Forestry, and Fishing (21.7%) and Wholesale and Retail Trade (21.4%).
On the stability front, annual overall inflation eased to 6.5% in June 2026, down from 6.6% in May. The sources highlight that this cooling trend was driven by price movements in both food items, which dropped to 6.7% from 6.9%, and non-food items, which dipped to 6.0% from 6.1%. Regionally, Lusaka Province saw the highest inflation at 8.4%, while Luapula Province recorded the lowest at 4.0%. Most provinces experienced a downward trend in inflation, except for the North Western Province, which remained stable at 5.7%.
Zambiaโs international trade performance for May 2026 remained exceptionally strong, posting a trade surplus of K7.0 Bn. Total export earnings jumped 18.7% to reach K30.1 Bn, largely driven by a 23.9% increase in traditional copper exports, which totaled K20.2 Bn. This export boom was supported by rising international demand, with LME copper prices climbing to US$13.5 thousand per MT. While Zambia maintains a healthy surplus with regional partners like the Dual SADC-COMESA grouping (K3.6 Bn), it recorded trade deficits with other regions including Asia (K1.1 Bn) and the European Union (K1.1 Bn).

Abundant GROWTH is coming!
@joseph_kalimbwe@Mundubilebrian Strategic reserves are not separate from food on the table-they help put food there. We have evidence of that. Suggesting citizens cannot see this connection underestimates public intelligence. If reserves truly do not matter, abandon them and let the results speak for themselves
Weโre going to double the size of Zambiaโs economy, ease the cost of living, and work with the private sector to employ millions of our citizens. Find out exactly how weโre going to do it, and read the full manifesto at https://t.co/cyKTJ0Qb0V
