My upstairs neighbor was LOUD. Constantly.

I filed a complaint with management.

Week later: I got a COUNTER-COMPLAINT.

From him. Saying I was too loud.

Me: I'm literally silent!

Manager: He has recordings.

Me: OF WHAT?!

Manager: plays audio

It was me... sneezing. Coughing. Walking to the bathroom at 2 AM.

Me: THAT'S JUST LIVING!

Manager: He's asking you to be quieter.

Month 2: I started filing complaints for EVERYTHING.

His TV. His footsteps. His BREATHING (I could hear it through the vents).

He filed complaints about my typing, my refrigerator hum, and my "aggressive dish washing."

Month 4: Management called us both in.

Manager: This has to stop.

Him: He's unreasonable!

Me: HE STARTED IT!

Manager: You've filed a COMBINED 87 complaints in two months.

Both of us: He's exaggerating!

Manager: I'm moving one of you.

Both: MOVE HIM!

Manager: flips a coin

Me: WHAT?!

Manager: Heads you move, tails he moves.

It landed on TAILS.

He had to move.

Him: THIS IS ILLEGAL!

Manager: It's in your lease. Clause 47: "Management reserves right to relocate tenants via random selection."

Me: That's a REAL clause?!

Manager: I added it last week.

Month 5: He moved out.

I felt... bad?

I left a note at his new apartment: "Sorry it got weird. Good luck."

Week later: Note under my door: "I'm sorry too. Want to get a beer?"

We got a beer.

Him: I have misophonia. Sounds drive me insane.

Me: I have anxiety. Complaints make me spiral.

Him: We're both disasters.

Me: Agreed.

Present day:

We're friends now.

He lives two buildings over.

We meet for drinks monthly.

Last week he said: "I can hear your typing from here."

Me: My apartment is 400 meters away!

Him: I KNOW. It's impressive how loud you are.

We're disasters but at least we're AWARE disasters.
