@nickflavin Absolutely agree but nowhere in the rules is the word 'intent' mentioned. He should at very least have given a yellow for the one that opened Hogan. Ref set the tone and Hogan probably thought at worst he'd get a yellow.

Richie Hogan got opened up by a hurl in the face earlier and it wasn't even a yellow card... A blow to the head is either a red or it isn't. #AllIrelandFinal

5.27 To strike an opponent with a hurley, either with force or causing injury. Punishment Red Card.
There is no mention of accidentally, intent or otherwise. Hogan's hit was far worse but both were red cards per rule

@nickflavin I don't disagree with you but I was always taught to play the ref. He did nothing when Hogan was struck. He didn't give yellows for blatant cynical fouls at both ends. I don't think there was a single card before the red. He had set a lenient tone and then went for the red.

@DelahuntyM Can't argue with any of that. Looked like he was looking for revenge but he would not have needed to if there had even been a yellow for the one that bust him open..... Ref set the tone by doing nothing and Hogan probably thought it was a free for all. Play the ref and all that

@dalyk1970 I think both were red. This is the rule in the Official Guide. "5: 27 - To strike an opponent with a hurley, either with force or causing injury"... Punishment is a red card. There is no mention of intent in the rules.... Hogan was struck and injured... and not even a yellow

@Rusty99_ I get it. So there are conditions to getting a red card for a blow to the head. If the ball is there you can pull on a lad in the face as hard as you want, take him out of the game and just say, 'the ball was there ref' and it's all grand????
