🚨 NEW PAPER OUT! 🚨
We analyzed how different organisms—from #microbes to #mammals 🦠🐝🪱🦅🦎🐸🦒🐟—respond to #aridity across 290 global #drylands#ecoregions 🌡️🌄
The results? SEQUENTIAL THRESHOLDS with dramatic biodiversity loss 📉

💡 Our recommendations:
Standardize monitoring protocols NOW
Mandate high-frequency surveys during migration
Use trained detection dogs in forested areas
Test mitigation effectiveness experimentally
Create transboundary conservation strategies
New paper out!! 🚨🥳
We here evaluated for the first time, the impact of wind energy on birds and bats in Chile, which represents, to our knowledge the first assessment of wind energy infrastructures on these two vulnerable groups in South America🌎

🔬 Critical gap we identified: no mitigation measures were tested on Chilean species. What works for European raptors may not work for Andean condors or Variable hawks. We urgently need species-specific, evidence-based solutions.
I am really happy to have contributed to this one. Huge collaborative effort of many "bird-acustic" researchers from several countries. 🙂 Kudos to Cristian, Esther and David for pushing this forward. 🐦⬛🎶🎙️🌍 @IBIS_journal
Just accepted paper in @IBIS_journal! This is the 1st published output of the WABAD dataset, including > 5,000 bird-annotated audios all over the world. A huge collaborative effort led by Cristian Pérez-Granados, Esther Sebastián and David Funosas. More research coming soon!!
Mammals with large home ranges, low reproductive rates & small body sizes are most vulnerable to roads: A meta-analysis 🛣️
Proposes that we should maintain low road densities & install small-mesh mitigation fencing along roads 🧱

Where will species go as the world changes? 🌍
Suggests that practitioners can find more reliable answers by pairing long-term biodiversity monitoring with dynamic models 📊🧪

6/7 ✨ But there's hope!
🌱 Primary productivity & species richness at lower trophic levels can BUFFER these declines
💚 Protecting biodiversity & reducing human pressures can help ecosystems resist aridification
Nature has resilience mechanisms—IF we give them a chance!
