From separation to reunification: promoting new angles of research from innovative lenses and focal points on “Africans in America” and African Americans
We were so excited and happy to join Augusta Onyeka (PhD student at University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill) in New Orleans at the Society of Historical Archeology conference, as she presented a paper on our collaboration with her as she works towards her dissertation.
It was an adventure getting there! We made it 15 minutes before the presentation was to start, but it was a pleasure being there. Thanks to all who came out giving us a few folks shy of a full house! And thank you for all the engagement!
Juneteenth at Solitude-Fraction at Virginia Tech today.
We often assume that our ancestor’s expectations of freedom post emancipation would be a western version, so we were happy to have Augusta to present what freedom would have meant to people of the Igbo culture and lineage
Join us on Saturday June 15th at Solitude-Fraction at Virginia Tech. We will be honoring the names of those enslaved, discuss what the expectation of “freedom” may have been based on their Igbo (West African) heritage, & stay for Story Time part 2
Proud to sponsor this Juneteenth event in Baltimore! This year we are supporting 2 Juneteenth representing 2 “landings” where enslaved (Solitude/Smithfield) & one of places after emancipation (Baltimore)
(More details on Solitude/Smithfield event to come)
Thanks to everyone who came out to the Story Time event at Smithfield
We hope you join us for part 2 at Solitude/Fraction on Saturday June 15th for Juneteenth. We’re planning on something unconventional
More details to come!
Note: thanks to Laura Wedin for the pictures!
During our recent collaboration with Virginia Tech this week, we moderated a panel, visited the proposed placement of the bench being made, and was able to met with some students and look at some projects they made for their class in the school of Agriculture.
Our ED is a co-author of this textbook published by Gibbs-Smith Education…released just in time for all the push back against African-American history in textbooks. When asked to contribute our ED said “of course” b/c “if others refuse to write it, write it yourself”
Thanks for great film festival and screening @RVAFilmFest for our short 1872 Forward: Foreword about some of @MoreFraction work w/ #VirginiaTech. Never before have I had a Q&A so engaging that it had to spill over to the theater lobby!!! TY John Wesby for creating a great film!
What means so much to me about the book, is that people see themselves in it. Even those from halfway across the world; from the countries of our roots 🙏🏽 - Kerri
Thank you to the Newark International Film Festival for screening our short film (in collaboration with WesbyOne Productions and Virginia Tech) 1872 Forward: Foreword this weekend! @NEWARKIFF#newarkinternationalfilmfestival
