Head of State (2024 Rewatch)? More like…Chris Rock does a great job in his hilarious directorial debut and serves up a breezy, fun, smart political satire that (mostly) holds up to this day. It also made me miss Bernie Mac. RIP you comedic genius. See it again!
Southland Tales (2024 Rewatch)? More like...this movie is gobbledygook. The acting, directing, script, all of it just a true swing-and-miss. It had 100 things to say and this feels like its yelling them all at you at once. Pass unless you're fascinated by terrible films.
Anora? More like...holy sh*t this was so good. Sean Baker already won me over with "The Florida Project" but he really takes it to another level here. Mikey Madison is a force of nature in this film and carries this on her back along with the rest of the memorable cast! SEE IT!
Strange Darling? More like...JT Mollner does his best Tarantino in the fantastic non-linear adventure that is 100% killer, no filler. I loved this movie, the acting, the cinematography, the gosh-darn incredible editing, wonderful stuff. Excited to see more from Mollner. See it!
Tarot? More like...a completely serviceable spooky time I found myself really enjoying and even being a little impressed at times gets completely overshadowed by one of the most baffling and anticlimactic endings I've seen in a film since Dr. Strange 2. Pass.
Gretel & Hansel? More like...Osgood Perkins is wildly talented to be able to take this classic fairytale and turn it into a beautiful looking film that gives off "The Witch (2015)" vibes in the best way possible! Not my favorite of his films but still very good! See it once!
Venom: The Last Dance? More like...what if "Iron Man 3" and "Logan" were terrible and nothing happend? That's this movie. It was so boring and ultimately, even after two after credits scenes, pointless I couldn't help but feel like this wasted everyone's time. Hard Pass.
Fight Club (1999)? More like..."Toxic Masculinity: The Film" is still an absolute classic. David Fincher was in his bag with this one! This adaptation of Chuck Palahniuk was so well put together, acting, sound design, writing, the legendary twist, its all a winner. See it again!
How to Be Love(d)? More like…I own and have read all of @humblethepoet ’s books and I’ve loved every single chapter and word. A wonderful writer who keeps dropping thoughtful and helpful gems everywhere he goes. Read it!
Smile 2? More like...Naomi Scott chugs about 150 bottles of Voss water in her wonderful performance in this film. The franchise is leaning into "Final Destination" or "It Follows" territory and I dig it! I don't feel the ending was super strong, but this was still fun!
Mandy (2018)? More like...there's a chain saw duel in this film so immediately I said "hell yeah"! This was a very fun, very uncomplicated film that produced a guffaw from me every time Nicolas Cage opened his mouth. A fun, slightly above Fine™️ watch!
Revenge (2017)? More like...Coralie Fargeat directed the hell out of this action thriller, with great shots, stellar editing, memorable characters, set-pieces and overall top-tier storytelling. This is a must watch!
V/H/S/Beyond? More like…another top-tier installment of this franchise with segments “Stork” and especially “Live and Let Dive” as original and scary highlights. The other segments were slightly above Fine™️ but overall, this is very much a spooky watch you should make time for!
Stopmotion (2023)? More like...this was pretty damn creepy and the vibes keep you unsettled through the whole runtime, but the story felt pretty flat to me. Adult me gives it a Fine™️, but child me would have considered this the scariest film of all time!
Late Night with the Devil? More like...while the real-time show gimmick was a bit interesting and I appreciate the lengths they went to pull this off, I just didn't find the spooky moments to be that spooky or the story that interesting to rank this anything above Fine™️.
Piece by Piece? More like...Morgan Neville drops another banger of a documentary. Pharrell's generation-defining music + this visually engaging LEGO form turn this fairly by-the-numbers biopic into something that is a must watch! See it!
Veep? More like...Julia Louis-Dreyfus and her incredible castmates do "Parks & Rec" but with awful people. I was not expecting the finale to be as heartbreaking as it was but I was damn near tearing up by the end. Incredible program and a must watch!
Joker: Folie à Deux? More like...a courtroom procedural punctuated with musical numbers that, while a little slow, really kind of dives into toxic fandom and "Last Jedi"s the first film in ways I found interesting for the runtime. It's Fine™️
The Simpsons S36E01 "Bart's Birthday"? More like...another big "W" for modern Simpsons. Conan O' Brien, John Cena, and a surprise "Series Finale"? What's not to love?
