J’avais six ans. Je suis encore capable de revoir la scène comme si elle était figée dans le temps.

J’étais assise sur le sol froid, près des machines de séchage d’une gare publique. Ma mère biologique m’y avait laissée, puis elle n’est jamais revenue. Je fixais la porte, convaincue qu’elle allait revenir — comme les enfants croient aux miracles.

Les gens passaient. Personne ne s’arrêtait.

Puis Kate est arrivée.

Elle m’a posé une simple question :
« Petite, où sont tes parents ? »

Et au lieu de repartir, elle s’est assise à côté de moi.

Elle est restée des heures dans la gare. Personne ne venait me chercher. Tous les numéros de téléphone essayés restaient sans réponse. Je n’avais rien, à part les vêtements que je portais.

Le lendemain, Kate est revenue. Puis le jour d’après encore.

Elle m’apportait des collations, une couverture, un petit carnet. Elle a dit aux services concernés qu’elle voulait me prendre en charge « jusqu’à ce que la bonne décision soit prise ��.

La bonne décision a finalement été des papiers d’adoption portant son nom.

Elle m’a élevée seule. Elle a travaillé deux emplois pour s’en sortir. Elle n’a manqué aucune réunion à l’école, aucun moment important, et elle est restée à mes côtés dans chaque nuit difficile.

Aujourd’hui, je suis devenue policière. Pas par hasard, mais par choix. Je voulais être pour d’autres enfants ce que Kate a été pour moi : une personne qui ne détourne pas le regard face à un enfant perdu.

Et aujourd’hui encore, elle dit que je suis la meilleure décision de sa vie.
