The crime, violence, and gun violence death rates in Baltimore are noticeably declining, thanks to the committed efforts of grassroots community-based organizations and nonprofits. Our dedicated volunteers are on the frontlines daily, working in schools, engaging with the community, and providing essential education and support. These programs meet people where they are, on the block in any neighborhood, in front of a liquor store, on a block with 10 vacant houses, at a drug rehabilitation center, etc. Countless programs have been tirelessly operating to save lives and revitalize neighborhoods. I am proud to highlight the impactful work of these programs and their leaders who make a difference every single day.

While discussions about the roles of elected officials are important, it is crucial not to overlook the relentless contributions of our local grassroots organizations. These organizations are deeply embedded in the community, actively working where it matters most. While elected officials have their part to play, the progress we are seeing today is a result of years of steadfast dedication and effort. It is a testament to the seeds of change that were planted long ago and are now bearing fruit.

Whenever someone enters a plea of guilty, we ask if they have been offered anything or threatened to take that plea.

And it strikes me that if entering the plea means going home that day instead of staying at a dangerous jail, you're not allowed to answer honestly.
