Elimination of illiteracy is as serious an issue to our history as the abolition of slavery.

66% of 4th graders aren’t reading proficiently. It impacts ALL students and especially impacts students of color. This is a civil rights issue!
This film is phenomenal! Free to stream until 3/9. Learn how schools have gotten it wrong for decades, & how structured literacy/systematic phonics impacts students of all income levels & cultural backgrounds! Literacy is an equalizer & a civil right. Let’s listen to the science!
My 2021 & 2022 reads. Reading more fiction of late and it’s too hard to pick a favorite. However, as far as nonfiction goes, my very favorite was Finding Me, a memoir by @violadavis. I laughed, I cried, I learned, I was entertained, and I was moved. And isn’t that why we read?
We’ve spent 4 years making a film about early literacy and are thrilled / relieved / proud as heck to share the trailer.
Retweet, share, send it to your kids’ principal, whatever you want. It’s time to get everyone talking about this #quietcrisis.

Essential listening for parents, teachers, & all concerned with the current literacy crisis. Balanced literacy does NOT align with scientific findings on reading. I can’t believe I, nor my college professors, nor Lucy Calkins knew it. We must do better.

Another tweet in support of @ehanford's new series on the problems with balanced literacy. There is something really perfect about the expansiveness of audio to explain/humanize this topic. I was already angry about reading and now I'm even angrier. https://t.co/GUPpLKNjJW
P19 ➡️ P5. Great result, especially given how much of a struggle it was at the start. Thanks always to the team, feels good to bring home some points 🇮🇹🏁~
Although I greatly miss the classroom, teaching reading part time this year via a virtual platform feels like the perfect fit for this season. I feel blessed to be learning from such an incredible team of literacy specialists! #RedwoodLiteracy#structuredliteracy
Cognitive science suggests that the more general academic knowledge and vocabulary you have, the better at general comprehension you are. How should that influence elementary school curriculums? @natwexler shares some thoughts.

Thank you to the moms, cousins, aunts, sisters, friends and former teachers who participated in my class’ book sponsorship program this year 📚❤️ Seeing students open a book addressed to them/uniquely tailored to their interests is the definition of holiday magic! #d123cov
