Five years ago today, our daughter Morgan’s story was shared with the world. On October 29, 2020, ESPN published an article written by Emily Kaplan about Morgan and her courageous journey through mental health challenges as a teenage hockey player after being removed from her hockey team after talking to her coach about struggling with her mental health.

At just 15, Morgan chose to speak out—not just for herself, but for every young person struggling in silence. Her bravery sparked conversations, inspired change, and helped get the Illinois Supreme Court to rule, for the first time under Illinois law, that sports teams cannot discriminate against players struggling with mental health.  What began as a painful chapter became a powerful movement for awareness, compassion, and resilience.

To this day, Morgan continues to be a voice for those who feel unheard. From running the #TEAMMORGAN student mental health arm of our foundation to the podcasts she has appeared on to being a mental health advocate. We couldn’t be prouder of the strength, empathy, and leadership she’s shown—and the lives she’s touched along the way.

Thank you to everyone who has been there for Morgan. Especially, to Eric Kussin from @SameHere_Global , Emily Kaplan from ESPN and @RobSchremp . You all are such an important part of our family, and we are forever grateful you all came into Morgan’s life.

Remember that mental health affects everybody. Like Morgan has said “Mental health is so important to athletes and youth everywhere…Players need support from their coaches during tough times. They should not be singled out and sent away.”
