Indonesian Vice Foreign Minister @havasoegroseno recently wrote on the 'Sea Denial Trap': how the combination of geography, international law, and asymmetric technology can form a strategy for archipelagic states that can 'price out' the superior fleets of major powers from strategic waterways. See his essay here: https://t.co/yknWXre6EH
Given the geo-strategic centrality of Indonesia's archipelagic sea-lanes, that a senior official publicly made the argument has led to concerns that the country may leverage or even 'close' some of those waters in the event of a regional conflict.
Tommy Koh and Bob Beckman (both of whom many would consider as UNCLOS 'godfathers') responded, noting that, 'restrictions on passage in maritime choke points by coastal States bordering the choke points are not supported by 1982 UNCLOS.' See: https://t.co/Zj8nFMAFzF
@aristioo and Jefferson Ng chimed in, arguing that, 'If Indonesia is a neutral state in a conflict scenario, it has the obligation to ensure transit passage and to keep archipelagic sea lanes open. As a belligerent, an anti-access/aerial denial (A2/AD) strategy and the closure of certain straits could become an option under the law of naval blockade.' See: https://t.co/iJSVmCnwlH
@dliliansa wrote a rejoinder, noting that 'when belligerents engage in hostile actions in neutral waters... they violate the neutrality of the neutral state, and the neutral state is obliged to take measures necessary to terminate that violation... [but] To ease the burden of policing neutrality across its vast waters in wartime, Indonesia may lawfully suspend innocent passage through the remainder of its archipelagic waters on national security grounds.' Looking forward to the debate continuing on...

3/ Paris argues that European should focus less on replacing every US capability and more on strengthening critical enablers: strategic airlift, intelligence, air-to-air refuelling and space assets. The objective is greater EU responsibility within NATO, not strategic decoupling.
1/ Ahead of the NATO Summit (7–8 July), A.Rufo is calling for an “orderly, coordinated and efficient” adjustment of the US posture in Europe. After meeting NATO Sec Gen M. Rutte, A. Rufo warned against changes that could “create dilemmas for Europeans.” https://t.co/eEElZ0qzaI
2/ The debate comes after US launched a 6-month review of its military presence in EU, while War Sec. P. Hegseth suggested that allies which did not support the US against Iran could face consequences. European capitals are increasingly seeking greater predictability from the US.
