Martha Ann Knight was the daughter of Newt & Rachel Knight, leaders of an informal band who harassed Confederate supply lines during the Civil War. Barred from school because of her race, she went on to join the LDS in 1882 & own land. Meet Martha here:

MHA is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Curt Bench, who died this a.m. from an aneurism. Founder of @BenchmarkBooks & a longtime supporter, participant, & exhibitor at MHA, Curt’s sense of humor & enthusiasm for friends, books, & Mormon history will be dearly missed.
In 1848, Betsy Fluellen made the pioneer trek to Utah as an enslaved 11-year-old child, separated from any family that she may have known. She died in Provo, Utah over 50 yrs later at the state mental hospital. She too was a LDS pioneer.
