The latest instalment in our journey to create mosquitoes with designer microbiomes!! 🦟🦠🧪
“A cryopreservation method to recover laboratory- and field-derived bacterial communities from mosquito larval habitats”
Great work @szymbiosis & @Mosmicrobes!

We took microbiomes from different 🦟species from the lab/field and transplanted into Ae. aegypti -> they responded similarly when the 🦠🦠were from lab donors -regardless of 🦟species, but far more changes to gene expression when using a field donor -pretty cool I reckon😀
Beyond proud of my amazing MDTP students @NicholsHollyL, @Asommer101, and @aldoaarellano for their hard work and incredible talks at ESA this year! ❤️🦟🥳
Congratulations to #MDTP student @NicholsHollyL for earning 1st place for her talk at the 2022 ESA, ESC, and ESBC Joint Annual Meeting in Vancouver, BC!

Applications for the assistant professor position in @UWMadisonMMI should be submitted by this Tuesday (November 15) to receive full consideration. We have supportive faculty with fantastic students across many graduate programs on campus! https://t.co/yRvjDGPnOs
Job alert! Since our brilliant @vectorvish is off to new adventures with a PhD scholarship @LSTMnews (congratulations again!! 🥳); @laura_brettell@mosquitomicrobe and myself will be recruiting for a research assistant in Liverpool @LSTMnews! (1/3)
Come and work with me at the University of Wisconsin-Madison! The Dept. of Plant Pathology is looking for a Nematologist at the Assistant OR Associate level. The research area is open. Applications are encouraged from citizens of any nation.

Huge congrats to all of the new fellows and advisers! Can’t wait to be reunited with @aldoaarellano after his internship @dermbiont this summer. Give your students the space to explore career options, folks. It’ll only make all the science better!
.@BenMicrobesMtg#BeneficialMicrobesMtg looking for a postdoc interested in discovering and culturing creosote-degrading microbes from woodrats. Email me if you are interested in this cool project. 🐭🦠
@Juul@mosquitomicrobe Our results support the latter statement, as our cryopreservation conditions had very little impact on recovery of bacteria, even from the field!
What better way to celebrate the close of the @BenMicrobesMtg this week than to share our new paper?… "Cryopreservation of mosquito microbiota for use in microcosm experiments"

@Juul@mosquitomicrobe DMSO doesn't play nice with mosquito larvae and trial and error with individual isolates suggested that 20% glycerol would be sufficient to preserve most bacteria from mosquito environments.
Our latest step towards establishing a field microbiome in the lab. Here we show that cryopreserved microbiomes from mosquito larval habitats can be stored and reconstituted in the lab. The resulting microbiomes are remarkable consistent too👍 Nice work @MosMicrobes & @szymbiosis
The sky’s the limit…and we’re working hard to continue to optimize these approaches, especially for field-derived microbiota. Stay tuned for more from us and our incredible colleagues @NicholsHollyL Miguel Medina Munoz @EvaHeinz7@laura_brettell@vectorvish
The same approach could also be used to cryopreserve microbiota for transplantation into different life stages or host species, à la:
