Mahindra’s Chakan plant has built its three-millionth vehicle, and fittingly, the milestone unit is an EV. 🏭
The real story is the pace of growth:
• First million: 107 months
• Latest million: just 27 months
• 657-acre manufacturing hub
• 19 models and 450+ variants across ICE, EV and commercial vehicles
• Seven multi-model assembly lines, ~1,500 robots and 98%+ body-shop automation
The milestone vehicle was the BE 6.
It’s also worth noting that Mahindra has added a dedicated EV manufacturing and battery assembly facility for its INGLO-based Electric Origin SUVs within the same Chakan hub.
Rather than separating ICE and EV production across different locations, Mahindra is expanding a single manufacturing ecosystem.
Could this integrated-hub strategy become the blueprint for India’s automotive industry as the EV transition unfolds?
Here’s the India angle many are missing on the new Freelander 8.
Chery and JLR have revealed the interior of the Freelander 8, the first model from their new joint venture. Since JLR is owned by Tata Motors, the technology behind this SUV is worth watching from an Indian perspective.
Highlights:
• 46.3-inch 8K panoramic display
• 2+2+2 six-seat layout with 1,200 mm rear legroom
• 800V EREV powertrain with a claimed 221 km electric-only range
• Up to 350 kW charging
• Huawei ADS with an 896-line LiDAR
It launches in China in H2 2026.
The bigger question is whether any of this platform or technology could eventually influence future Tata or JLR products.
It's official. The Tata Sierra.ev is here, and it starts at Rs 18.79 lakh. ⚡
A legend, reborn fully electric:
• Introductory starting price: Rs 18.79 lakh (ex-showroom)
• Two batteries: 75 kWh and 63 kWh
• Up to 665 km MIDC range (510-530 km real-world C75) on the 75 kWh
• 263 km topped up in just 15 min
• QWD dual-motor all-wheel drive
• Lifetime battery warranty
• Built on the acti.ev platform, between the Curvv EV and Harrier EV
That starting price undercuts the segment and lands right at the Mahindra BE 6, Hyundai Creta Electric and Maruti e Vitara. New benchmark? 🔋
Tata Sierra EV range and batteries, now official:
75 kWh pack:
• 665 km MIDC | 510-530 km real-world (C75)
• 263 km topped up in 15 min
63 kWh pack:
• 565 km MIDC | 440-460 km real-world (C75)
• 238 km topped up in 15 min
Two things worth flagging: the base pack is 63 kWh, not the 65 kWh everyone assumed. And the honest figure is the C75 one, a still-strong 510-530 km on the bigger battery. 🔋
Tata Sierra EV is here, and the headline isn't just the car. Tata has announced a lifetime battery warranty for it.
Confirmed at launch:
• 75kWh battery pack, with a 'no range anxiety' pitch
• Lifetime battery warranty
• QWD dual-motor all-wheel drive (Tata's second AWD EV after the Harrier EV)
• Built on the acti.ev platform, slotting between the Curvv EV and Harrier EV
Expected (pricing and range to be confirmed on stage): 500km+ real-world range and a roughly Rs 20-25 lakh price, taking on the Mahindra BE 6, Hyundai Creta Electric and Maruti e Vitara.
A lifetime battery warranty could be the trust card that wins over buyers still nervous about EVs. Tempting enough? 🔋
BYD predicts EVs will soon account for 80% of China’s new car sales.
The gap today is striking:
• China: 62.9% electrified sales (EVs + plug-in hybrids + range-extenders) in May, a record
• Global average: ~25%
• USA: ~10%
• India: ~7% EV share in May, also a record
India’s number looks small, but it’s roughly where China was just a few years ago.
The difference? China scaled with massive state support, affordable EVs across segments and a dense charging network.
India’s transition is unfolding differently, with EVs, hybrids, CNG and flex-fuel vehicles all competing for growth.
Do we follow China’s path, or create our own?
BYD has confirmed the Seal U DM-i (Sealion 6), its first plug-in hybrid for India, launching before the end of 2026.
What's officially confirmed so far:
• A 1.5L petrol engine with BYD's DM-i hybrid system and two electric motors (one generator, one traction)
• An 18.3 kWh Blade LFP battery that charges externally like an EV
• Up to 70 km of pure-electric range (BYD claim)
• Over 1,200 km combined range on a full tank and charge (BYD claim)
• A mid-size SUV, around 4.7m long, seating five
India trims, features and pricing are still to come. Would you take a plug-in hybrid over a full EV? 🔌
