The Majestic Aazhi Therottam, Asia’s Largest Chariot Festival Today (March 29, 2026)

The grand Aazhi Therottam of Thiruvarur Sri Thyagarajaswamy Temple will be celebrated on the auspicious Ayilyam Natchathiram during the 36-day Panguni Peruvizha Brahmotsavam.

On March 28, 2026 (Saturday) at around 7:00 PM, Sri Thyagaraja Swami will ceremoniously proceed from Yathasthanam to Aazhi Ther via Vittavasal, performing the sacred Ajapa Nadanam.

On March 29, 2026 (Sunday), the Therottam (chariot procession) of the five deities will take place through the temple streets as per the scheduled timings.

The beautifully decorated Aazhi Ther stands at an impressive 96 feet tall
•Simhasanam: 30 feet
•Kattumanam: 66 feet

The massive chariot weighs around 300 tonnes

Modernization by BHEL, Tiruchi includes hydraulic brakes fitted on all four 9-feet-high iron wheels

The chariot is pulled using four giant ropes, each 425 feet long, with a total weight of about 4 tonnes

The Aazhi Ther is adorned with intricate sculptures of Lord Brahma, four horses, Yaali, and various deities from the temple

This majestic chariot is glorified in the sacred Panniru Thirumurai, Thevaram hymns sung by the revered Nayanmars
