That’s a wrap on Gun Sense University 2024! We held our annual training conference in DC this week with more than a thousand survivors, @MomsDemand and @StudentsDemand volunteers.
Some highlights 🧵
Political Power is one of the most undervalued, underrated and under appreciated sources of community development in the black and brown community. Religious communities also are not properly educated on the value of their political voices. Unfortunately laws impact us all.
It’s been six years since 17 students and staff members were shot and killed and 17 more were wounded at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL by a gunman armed with a Smith & Wesson AR-15. The tragic shooting moved an entire generation of young advocates and changed the landscape of the gun safety movement forever.
We honor the victims and survivors of this tragedy by continuing to fight for the safety of our communities alongside young leaders in the gun safety movement, including recent attempts by Florida lawmakers to roll back critical gun safety laws enacted after the Parkland tragedy.
As we mourn the lives taken or forever changed in Parkland, we also hold in our hearts the victims and survivors of the mass shooting at Northern Illinois University that took place 16 years ago today. There, five students were killed and 17 more people were wounded when a gunman opened fire on campus. This week is a stark reminder that more must be done to prevent gun violence in our schools and communities.
Sometimes it’s the people behind the scenes . White House OVP Director Greg Jackson @University of Chicago Crime Lab Inaugural CVILA graduation. Truly appreciate you Bro! 21 Luv Salute 🫡

Eleven years ago today, 17-year-old Jordan Davis was shot and killed over loud music at a Florida gas station. After his senseless death, Jordan’s mother, @RepLucyMcBath, dedicated her life to ending gun violence, becoming a national leader with Moms Demand Action and @Everytown.
In Jordan’s honor, Lucy ran for and won a seat in Congress on a gun safety platform in 2018, and again in 2022. In that time, she helped pass the first major gun safety legislation in nearly three decades—the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act.
We are forever grateful to Rep. McBath for turning her anguish over Jordan’s senseless death into action. We’ll continue to follow her lead and fight for stronger gun laws to spare other families this same pain.
Lachelle Rice is one of the most inspirational highlights of my experience at GSU Chicago 2023. As my bro Sean Gauge would say Peace, Power, and Positivity emanates from your heart and soul ✊🏾🧡💪🏾@MomsDemand@Everytown@shannonrwatts @lauraladida @LachelleRice@Alex02ny
“There is power in showing up as a group over and over again. In the past 10 years, you’ve jammed the hallways of Congress with strollers, testified late into the night, and packed statehouses so often and for so long that our red shirts are now ubiquitous across the country.” - @ShannonRWatts on the power of @MomsDemand ❤️
‘It isn’t a left or right issue, it’s a life or death issue’ Thank you @BarackObama for your message to @MomsDemand volunteers at Gun Sense University! #GSU2023
These champions from Baltimore are in Chicago for the @MomsDemand leadership conference. They are all survivors of gun violence fighting for a safer country for all of us. #GSU2023
