@J_O_Holliday @HistoricalSoton Yes it's an unusual surname. I found a few pieces of information on the landlord in newspaper archives. But most returns for Balne were for the town itself. Around 1891 he & his friend Thankful Joy caught a whale using a small boat and dragged it ashore.
