Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens first met in 2005 while auditioning for Disney Channel’s High School Musical. Zac later recalled walking into the audition with around 40 other guys, where they went through dancing, singing, and other rounds before the casting team began pairing actors together for scene readings. Zac and Vanessa were repeatedly paired with each other, and their chemistry became obvious almost immediately.

Vanessa later explained that she was only 15 years old at the time and remembered thinking Zac was cute. She said they kept getting matched together during the audition process, and they quickly developed a connection. Zac similarly said they “clicked” from the beginning. Eventually, the two were chosen as Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez, the central couple in High School Musical.

What made their story even more memorable was that their on-screen chemistry eventually became a real-life romance. While filming the first movie, their friendship grew into a relationship, and Vanessa later said they “created a bond from the start.” They went on to date for several years while starring together in the High School Musical trilogy, becoming one of Disney’s most famous young couples of the 2000s.
