Codie Sanchez, founder of Contrarian Thinking, has a four-letter word she uses to decide if any business is worth your time and money: MOAT.
Of all the frameworks out there for evaluating a business, this one cuts through the noise fast.
"If you want to know if your business is going to make you money or not or investable or not, we use the MOAT strategy." @Codie_Sanchez
Each letter stands for a question every entrepreneur needs to answer honestly.
M — Margin
"You want a business that actually makes you money, doesn't just generate revenue."
A good business has at least 15% net margin. Not top-line revenue. The money that actually ends up in your pocket.
O — Operations
Can this thing scale, or have you just bought yourself a job?
Codie draws a sharp line here: "There's a real difference between a CEO and a self-employed person."
If the business can't run without you — you're not a business owner. You're just an employee who signs their own cheques.
A — Advantage
Do you have an unfair advantage?
"Over time, all arbitrage windows close."
Your edge might be social media distribution, a decade of industry experience, or superior logistics. Without one, it's only a matter of time before someone outcompetes you.
T — Total Addressable Market
Is the market big enough to build the business you want?
TAM is about finding a real market large enough for your version of success.
Rate each letter from 1 to 10, then add them up.
• 30 or above: Fund it. This is a fundable business model.
• 20 to 30: Fix it. Real problems exist, but they're solvable.
• Under 20: Flee it. This probably isn't the right business for you.
Most people evaluate business ideas on excitement or gut feel. MOAT forces honesty before you've spent years finding out the hard way.
