FROM “SNATCH IT” TO “LEAVE KUJE”: WHAT IS NIGERIA BECOMING?

It is increasingly deeply disturbing and dangerous the language coming from our political class. When the Kuje Area Council Chairman says, “it’s either you are doing APC or leave the Area Council,” that is not leadership; it is political intimidation and an assault on the citizenship of Nigerians.

And this is not happening in isolation. Just before the Osun election, a serving Senator representing Osun East, Francis Fadahunsi, was caught in a controversy over a viral statement urging supporters to “kill Accord.” Whatever clarification followed, the fact that such language could come from a serving Senator in the heat of an election should concern every Nigerian.

Then we hear the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, say that if President Tinubu had wanted to win Osun “at all costs,” he would have been there, “and we would have won it, and there’s nothing the governor can do.”

And we cannot forget the political philosophy expressed during the 2023 campaign: “fight for it, snatch it, grab it, and run away with it.”

President Tinubu has also been associated with the cynical political maxim that “all is fair in politics.” If that mentality is allowed to take root, then what we are witnessing today should not surprise us. When leaders suggest that every tactic is permissible in the pursuit of political power, eventually, their followers begin to believe that intimidation, exclusion and political aggression are legitimate tools. This is the consequence of normalising the idea that the end justifies the means.

Individually, these statements are troubling. Together, they reveal a frightening normalisation of politics as conquest rather than competition.

Kuje does not belong to APC. Osun does not belong to APC. Nigeria does not belong to any political party. Nigeria belongs to Nigerians.

Nobody has the right to tell a citizen to leave his community because he refuses to support a political party. Nobody has the right to suggest that an election can simply be won “at all costs.” And nobody should use language that turns political opponents into enemies.

This is how political impunity travels from the top to the grassroots. Democracy is not “support us or leave.” Democracy is not “win at all costs.”
Democracy is not “snatch it, grab it and run.” And democracy certainly cannot be built on the belief that all is fair in politics. Democracy is the freedom to choose, the courage to disagree, and the humility to accept the people's choice.

The DSS, Police and other relevant institutions must take inflammatory political statements seriously, not to suppress political speech, but to ensure that reckless words do not become threats, intimidation or violence.

No politician owns Kuje. No party owns Nigeria. The people are not subjects, politicians are not landlords, and the ballot is nobody's private property.

We must reject this politics of fear, conquest and intimidation, peacefully, constitutionally and courageously. Nigeria belongs to all of us. And we must never surrender it to the politics of “snatch it, grab it and run.”

I have consistently continued to respectfully appeal to those in office today to prioritise reconstruction and maintenance of existing roads and other infrastructure over commencing new ones.

I left someone in Onitsha on Saturday night to take the first bus to Lagos on Sunday morning. Until I left Lagos at 8 pm yesterday, he had not arrived in Lagos. He only arrived in Lagos at about 2 pm today. A journey that usually takes a maximum of 8 hours now takes nearly two days.

This is not just about bad roads. It is about lost man-hours, stranded passengers sleeping on highways, wasted fuel, damaged vehicles, delayed goods, and businesses losing millions of naira.

Nigerians do not need new projects just for the headlines. We need functional roads that make life and economic activity possible.

A government must understand that infrastructure is not necessarily about the size of the project; it is about the number of lives and livelihoods it improves.

A new Nigeria is POSSIBLE, and Nigeria will be OK. -PO

1. Campaign with data, creativity, and authenticity instead of cash-and-carry politics

2. Build coalitions that cut across tribe, religion, and class because the real enemy is stagnation

3. Use technology, storytelling, and grassroots energy to outthink and outwork the status quo

4. Turn every polling unit into a laboratory of new ideas; better voter education, real-time accountability, youth-led monitoring

The same new ideas that will win elections are the ones that will build the new Nigeria that is possible: a Nigeria where innovation is rewarded, where competence outranks connection, where the next generation inherits opportunity instead of excuses.

And it is good that we already have a presidential candidate in Mr Peter Obi and his vice, Senator Musa Kwankwaso; leaders who truly believe in us. Leaders who understand that this dream is not theirs alone to carry, but ours to build together. They see the fire in Gen Z and millennial eyes. They trust the nonconformists, the out-of-the-box thinkers, the young innovators who refuse to recycle the past. With them, the partnership is clear: their experience meeting our energy, their vision meeting our boldness, so that together we create the new Nigeria that is possible.

So refuse the old script.
Reject the comfort of conformity.
Work harder than anyone expects.
Plan deeper than the opposition can imagine.
Then surprise them not with noise, but with results they never saw coming.

Because the brain that stays in a winning state does not wait for permission.
It creates the future.

Young Nigerians, well-meaning citizens of every age:
The power is already in your hands.
