Wow, these Digger reactions are so all over the place I’m struggling to gage what its awards run looks like. Enough praise to make me think Cruise is safe, but maybe the other top categories drop off? Still very excited to see this, fingers crossed it’s not another Oscar fiasco.

Shocked to see people crying Category Fraud to Anne Hathaway going Supporting Actress instead of Lead Actress for The Odyssey! The blatant category fraud would’ve been Lead 100%, there are huge chunks of the film she’s not in, and she never could’ve won. Supporting is correct.

Everyone is telling me since it didn’t place in TIFF’s People’s Choice Award that Club Kid is dead. It’s this year’s Sorry, Baby, it won’t go the distance. I refuse to believe it. Club Kid is so entertaining, so moving, such an extraordinary film, it HAS to get into Best Picture!

Best Actor this year is so exciting, anything can happen, but now that I’ve seen Wild Horse Nine I think John Malkovich has a very good chance to win. He gives one of the best performances of his career, and with a strong narrative and fantastic movie, Malkovich might be the one.

I have returned from the Toronto Film Festival where I saw 20 movies, so many I loved, and I have to say my greatest joy was watching that Julianne Moore performance in The Debut. I can’t stop thinking about it. The heights she reaches with this incredible character, get ready.

Lee Chang-dong’s Possible Love is a gorgeous, Oscar-worthy gem filled with richly textured performances by a phenomenal cast and a superb, observant screenplay that gives the viewer so much to think about. I saw a lot of great films at TIFF this year, and this is one of the best!

Werner Herzog’s Bucking Fastard teams up Kate Mara and Rooney Mara in one of the weirdest movies I’ve seen in years. The whole thing is just kind of bizarre and pointless, more of a mood piece than a traditional narrative, but it’s also at times beautiful and strangely hypnotic.

The loveliest surprise at TIFF has to be Lauren Miller Rogen’s insightful, witty, and very charming new comedy Babies, which is a total joy from beginning to end. In this story about parenthood and finding a path that works for you, Anna Kendrick delivers a winning performance.

Ink is a wonderfully entertaining journalism movie with rapid-fire pacing, a killer soundtrack, Danny Boyle’s signature visual style, and a fantastic lead performance by Jack O’Connell. The film never fully takes flight as a true original of its genre but it’s fun while it lasts.

If you want to find two talented actors drowning on-screen, look no further than Javier Bardem & Penélope Cruz in Florian Zeller’s Bunker, the big disappointment I’ve seen at TIFF. After a promising start, this film devolves into a clunky, self-serious misfire with nowhere to go.
