On Me and Social Media
I needed to write this for a long time. I feel like I owe it to some of you.
For years I’ve experienced alternating phases, during which I either felt pretty motivated or quite low on energy. At one point, I may have also struggled with symptoms of a burnout.
To me, these phases come and go unpredictably, despite my best efforts to try to get to the bottom of it. Obviously, this is extremely frustrating.
I’ve had professional help. At least a couple times tests revealed that me feeling tired and exhausted all the time was probably due to a physical deficit. Other times the issue was more likely (also) psychological. Eventually I even went to therapy, although I had never thought I’d need it.
I needed to learn quite a few things, after having it comparatively easy early in life. A major trait of mine is that I’m kind of a perfectionist. I’m my biggest critic. At times this is advantageous but often it is not, particularly when it hinders me to keep in touch or to initiate contact. I know that it rationally doesn’t make sense but — especially with people I really care about — it can happen that rather than “just” write, call etc. I choose to not get in touch at all, because I feel it wouldn’t be adequate enough and I would disappoint others and myself. For that I’m truly sorry.
I used to try to keep up with everything and everybody, including on social media. Almost like a compulsion, according to one psychologist. I don’t have the energy to do that for all my interests anymore. Especially when a phase with tiredness hits, a mental backlog gets created, which I’m never able to work through.
On social media certain events have also led to my queue overflowing more and more often. On top of that, all major networks have made it more and more difficult to only follow what one really cares about.
I used to get so overwhelmed with posts I wanted to follow up on and/or reply to etc. that I didn’t know where to start and ended up paralyzed, not motivated to do anything.
By now, I can mostly manage on a daily basis. Not visiting some social media for large stretches of time. Unfortunately, with some of you, there is no other way to keep up. Large physical distances don’t exactly help either.
It’s difficult for me, as I do care. I care about people. I care about those of you I have met, often even more than I allow myself to admit. Maybe that’s me trying to protect myself from some of my feelings. But I also don’t want to overstep any boundaries, e.g. by asking for other, more direct contact details.
I’m sorry I’ve been so quite at times. I most likely have been thinking about you, while — nowadays — prioritizing on trying to get better, myself.
Last but not least, feel free to somehow contact me directly. This includes people I have never gotten in touch with, as I find many of you very interesting. It can help me to not feel (as) bad and to get over not having talked to you in forever.
Lately, I’ve also been going to gatherings. Such “fixed” commitments also help me to get over myself, talk to others and keep in touch. Feel free to catch me there.
@MsMichelle_Lacy Somewhere there might be a parallel universe, in which I had figured things out earlier and we met during that time, when I was in the same area.
I wonder how that would look like.

Until recently I was way too embarrassed to talk about it and I’d call it my ultimate kink but for the longest time I’ve been and can’t stop thinking about being circumcised. I don’t (entirely) know why.
@MissIsobelDevi@MsMichelle_Lacy They should have sent one to you instead of MKBHD (https://t.co/J2BJcd3zBu). I think it would have been the better marketing move.
