On Wednesday, CREDICORP launched *YouthCred for Entrepreneurs (Phase 3)* — the largest instalment yet of the youth credit intervention *President Bola Ahmed Tinubu* promised in his 2025 Democracy Day broadcast. Phases 1 and 2 have already served _youth corpers_ and formally _employed youth_ respectively.

The launch was led by the Hon. *Minister of Finance*, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, with three other Ministers: of *Budget and National Planning; Youth Development; and Women Affairs*; and heads of Federal agencies.

Access remains through https://t.co/lJgHFs39qs or any of CREDICORP’s participating financial institutions, incl. microfinance banks serving rural communities.

Also this week: CREDICORP announced its milestone of 300,000 beneficiaries so far, in all 774 LGAs, with ₦47 billion in consumer credit through 36 PFIs, 5 local industries supported — and still zero non-performing loans @CrediCorpNG @uzonwagba @FinMinNigeria @ummuh_Zahra

The Black Gold That Made Nigeria Poor

Oil is called Black Gold because it creates wealth. Sadly, in Nigeria, Black Gold also became the reason many other sectors died.

Before crude oil was discovered in commercial quantity at Oloibiri in 1956, Nigeria was an agricultural giant. Cocoa from the West, groundnut from the North and palm produce from the East were the backbone of the economy. Agriculture employed millions of Nigerians, fed the nation and earned most of our foreign exchange.

Then oil came. The oil boom of the 1970s changed everything.

Easy oil money made us abandon the difficult work of building farms, factories and industries. Government revenues grew rapidly, but agriculture gradually lost attention. Nigeria moved from exporting food to importing food. Cocoa, rubber, palm oil and groundnut, once our pride, declined as oil became the centre of national planning.

The painful part is this. Oil itself did not destroy Nigeria. Our dependence on oil did.

Countries like Norway discovered oil and became richer because they invested the proceeds wisely. Nigeria earned hundreds of billions of dollars from crude oil over several decades, yet poverty, unemployment and poor infrastructure remained stubborn challenges. Several studies have described this as the "resource curse", where a country blessed with natural resources records weak long-term development because other productive sectors are neglected and institutions become weaker.

Today, whenever oil prices fall, the naira shakes, government revenue comes under pressure and the entire economy feels the pain. That is the danger of putting almost all your eggs in one basket.

Nigeria's real wealth was never crude oil. Our real wealth is the ability to produce, manufacture, export and innovate across many sectors.

Black Gold gave us money. But it also made us forget the value of hard work, diversification and long-term planning.

Perhaps the greatest mistake in our economic history was not discovering oil. It was allowing oil to make us forget everything else.
