📷Seven days of heroic defense
On 7 September 1939, the small Polish garrison on Westerplatte, Free City of Danzig, surrendered, but by then, these soldiers had become seven times the soldiers they used to be.

📷 The orders required the 200-odd men, commanded by Maj. Henryk Sucharski and Cpt. Franciszek Dąbrowski, to hold on for a day, because any more was unthinkable against overwhelming enemy forces and attacks from sea, air and land. They held on for seven days of constant German artillery shelling, dive bomber attacks and countless infantry charges.

📷 Seven days gave them plenty of face and bought enemy respect. Seven days turned them into national heroes and their defence into a symbol. Seven days depleted their ammunition but charged thousands of morale batteries elsewhere. Seven days of hopeless fight generated plenty of hope for troops and civilians throughout the country.

📷 7 September 1939: they were exhausted, had 15 dead, many wounded and almost no ammo, so the CO surrendered the post that had fought from the first moments of WW2 but could fight no more.

07.09.1939 r. - wiadomością dnia jest kapitulacja Westerplatte.

Przez 7 dni ok. 200 żołnierzy Wojska Polskiego, pod dowództwem mjr. Sucharskiego (?) i kpt. Dąbrowskiego, bohatersko broniło placówki przed niemieckimi atakami z morza, lądu i powietrza.
