Independent Safeguarding Audit Update

INEQE Safeguarding Group recently met with Church of England safeguarding professionals in Belfast to discuss their expert insights on safeguarding within the Church. While INEQE maintains absolute independence, these collaborative sessions ensure that the audit process remains up to date with policy and practice across the Church as well as focusing on areas of audit feedback that identify stubborn challenges and areas a for improvement.

Meeting Highlights:

Audit Team Expansion: INEQE announced the expansion of the audit team to add further depth and value to the Church of England  Independent Safeguarding Audit Programme (ISAP).

Threshold Tool Development: The group explored the potential for a standardised Church "Threshold Tool". This proposed tool would assist safeguarding teams in consistently distinguishing between conduct issues and safeguarding concerns, aiming for a uniform and effective approach to identifying harm.

Progress Tracking: The group reviewed previous recommendations from past audits, identifying inhibitors to progress, such as certain organisational structures, and indicators of early positive impact.

Stakeholder Engagement: Finally we updated participants on the trends and themes regarding stakeholder engagement and reflected on the fact that the Audit has now engaged with over 300 victims and survivors. Their input is crucial and the Audit is working to enhance engagement with families in the coming year.

The meeting concluded with a commitment to maintaining a strong ‘line of sight’ on progress and ensuring that audit recommendations lead to tangible improvements in safeguarding governance.
