Reading about Leah’s life with my students, finding her on the memorial & in the museum, & honoring her by emphasizing this local connection to the attacks made the day & theme even more impactful. This trip brought the humanity & universality of literature to life. What a day.

One of the themes of Foer’s novel is the idea that all of us are connected in more ways than we think, especially in the face of grief & the endless battle to overcome it. We brought that theme to life as we honored our connection to that day, DHS grad Leah Oliver.

Yesterday was one of the true highlights of my 10-year teaching career, taking 103 amazing AP Lit students to NYC to visit the 9/11 Museum & Memorial to complement our reading of Jonathan Safran Foer’s beautiful coming-of-age novel Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close.
