Failing in Public: How I LOST a 2000$ Deal
4 Mistakes to avoid so you get paid instead.
Here's the story, and 1 Big Lesson at the endπ
------
1. Let's start with the context:
Lat week I had a presentation to 11 CEOs about the potential of AI and how to scale a business with AI.
It went well. Very well.
So well that one of them contacted me to help them grow their SaaS (Software as a Service) idea.
So far so good. Project was very ambitious, a Super App, powered by AI, with a team of 12 superstars.
---
2. During the discovery call they tell me they need a website demo to present the idea to investors.
Can I do it for them?
Not ideal start. Weird request.
I am an AI consultant, NOT a web developer.
BUT I did a few websites so I rushed head on and took the challenge.
Mistake #1: I was arrogant, overstretched.
---
3. I doubled down and told them I can also add a chatbot assistant demo to capture leads and give information to visitors about the app.
This is within my expertise.
---
4. They ask me about the price.
Not understanding perfectly the scope of the project I make a BIGGER mistake.
I tell them that I will first build the demo website + bot for them, and IF they like it, we talk about payment.
Logic: big corpo client, these ones can pay between 3-10k easily if you have a foot in the door.
Mistake #2: I didn't know how much work it would be and I offered to do it for free. NO.
---
5. They were happy with the proposal, eager to see results.
I got to work.
It was challenging work because as I said, I'm NOT a web developer and I don't want to be one.
Did I outsource to an expert to focus on my strong points? No.
Mistake #3: I was stubborn. There was a smarter way to do it but I wanted to do it myself, like a cool solopreneur. NO.
---
6. Twenty hours of hard work later I had the deliverables.
I present them the website and chatbot demo.
Emphasis on DEMO. It was supposed to be a demonstration, not the full product.
Because they didn't pay me. That would be of course more expensive and more work. But it was already my mistake, I should have clarified this.
Did I clearly managed expectations and highlight this aspect? No.
Mistake #4: Manage expectations, make it clear what clients will get, leaving them guessing will get you in trouble.
---
7. I showcase the work.
They like it but are not particularly impressed, thinking it was supposed to be the work of an expert Website Developer.
I mention my price for further cooperation, starting from 2000$, based on my hourly rate.
Did they even have this kind of budget? Perhaps not.
---
8. The Downfall:
11 hours later I get the email:
"As a general comment both at first sight and later in detail, we feel there is a lot to do in the design part.
We wanted to see your work because we liked your presentation and we like you, but for this particular case of the web we have to say no.
We would like to keep in touch and explore possible collaborations."
I dropped the ball. F***.
Went from 2000$ of invoice to 0$.
Because of the website, which was NOT my expertise.
---
Lesson: It's on me. It's always on me.
A smarter Alex would have set the tone from the beginning:
Website? "Yes, but I'm not the expert in that area"
Deliverable? "It's a DEMO, not the finished product"
Even better: "My services cost X, is it in your budget?"
Involve other pros, to cover my weaknesses.

Feel free to roast me.
Or give me some advice.
Or let me know your thoughts.
Or share the story with friends.
We lost one yesterday.
But TODAY is a BEAUTIFUL day to work and create new opportunities!
Andiamo! π
