Doomed forest hermit with too many cats, I mostly post nature photos I’ve taken, clips I’ve made from weird movies, & yell into the void about music. He/him. ☭
@stankbrakhage Happy birthday, fellow Tragic Ceremony-watcher! I just saw it for the first time last week and it was a real trip. I was not expecting the Black Mass scene to be quite so wild, nor to see its sword-through-face shot endlessly replayed with such glee!
@stankbrakhage The sheer solipsism required to not only be unable to fathom that someone could like things that you don’t, but to outright claim they must be lying... that arrogant argumentum ad incredulum bullshit will FOREVER be one of my least favorite things to crop up in media discussion.
@DinosaurDracula Ah, it did work! I guess it only busted the preview on my profile, then. Which I found out is apparently limited to around 4,500 characters or so.
@DinosaurDracula Haha, I think I actually managed to finally break the already generous Disqus character limit this time. When I see the pending post on my profile, it’s only the first third of it all. YOU ASKED FOR THIS. Gonna have to do it in installments.
@c0mmunicants Can’t remember the actual first one, as my dad was always renting movies with subtitles, but the earliest one I recall making a big impression was ‘La Planète sauvage’, a formative experience that likely helped turn me into the insufferable weird movie person I am today.
@stankbrakhage Baffles my mind that so many people still think she’s an ardent feminist given the fact that she’s married to (and still defends) a creepy pickup artist who wrote a book on how to psychologically manipulate people into relationships—which he even brags about having done to her.
If ‘Last Voyage of the Demeter’ was set in the F13 universe, the trailer and poster would stay the same, but people would be disappointed to find out that 90% of the movie was actually Dracula wandering around Manhattan.
@stankbrakhage I feel like there’s an alternate universe out there where there’s actually a Rollin film that’s basically ‘Carmilla and Julie Go Boating’, and I feel cheated that I don’t live in that one instead of here.
Silene laciniata ssp. californica.
Colloquially referred to as “pinks”, I thought this was silly for years, as they’re red, not pink. Then I found out it’s actually because the lobed petals look like they were cut with pinking shears!
@stankbrakhage I recall loving it, but I only saw it 15+ years ago, so I had forgotten enough plot points that a lot of the stuff in ‘Sorcerer’ felt totally fresh! IIRC, Friedkin was adamant it wasn’t a WoF remake, but a new adaptation of the book, so I’m curious how much influence crept in.
@stankbrakhage It was a “should’ve seen it ages ago” film for me until just last year! Excellent hot ‘n’ humid summer fare. I want to double-feature it w/ ‘Wages of Fear’ next time. Was so long since I saw WoF that I couldn’t compare them, but that kinda helped let it stand on its own merits.
One of my favorites from earlier this year—the thoroughly psychedelic-looking Calochortus supurbus. Most C. superbus at this elevation lacks that magenta entirely, but it crops up in my immediately local population quite often, this being the darkest one I’ve seen so far.
