The Kariakoo collapse is a stark reminder of long-standing issues in urban development across Tanzania's cities.

Prof. Tibaijuka emphasised the need for immediate reforms, warning that the failure to rectify these systemic flaws has resulted in immense economic losses, lives lost, and reputational damage 63 years after the country gained independence.

Housing Levy was and is extremely unpopular. I had decided to make peace with that tax because in each of our construction site, each 50sqm generated 1 direct job and another 3-5 indirect jobs.

I estimated that the housing levy programme would have created 200,000 direct jobs and another likely 600,000 indirect jobs each year. Meaning 1,0000,000 direct jobs and another 6,000,000 indirect jobs in 5 years. That would be a decent % of the jobs we would need today.

Mass number of jobs, are sometimes available in labor- export and intensive industries and not necessarily out of Industrialization. Where is the balance? Industrialization creates more paying but fewer jobs but these other labor intensive sectors create more #jobs

Africa needs to look into Agric, Retail and Hospitality, Manufacturing and Construction. India created majority (41%) of jobs in low- skill #construction

Today’s rulling could easily have taken away 1,000,000 direct jobs and another 6,000,000 jobs with it even as it saved Kenyans already hard pressed employees taxes.

How can else can we create that many jobs and skills?
