“I was attached to French Marine snipers on a nighttime mission in Afghanistan. Just after we finished a long climb to the top of a mountain, carrying heavy packs, ammo and armor, we were hit by a freak hailstorm. A French Marine was killed by lightning about 25 meters from me, and two French Special Forces soldiers in the valley below us were swept away by a flash flood.

I was acquainted with one of the SF soldiers, Yann Hertache. Yann was a big, strong, tough, nice guy. He died after jumping into the floodwater in an attempt to save the other soldier.

On top of the mountain, we were beaten by golfball-sized hail and drenched in freezing rain for half an hour. I was mostly protected, but the outside of my arms and legs took all the hits. We didn't know anyone had been killed until the storm was over, then had a long, miserable, freezing morning climbing down the mountain, then being sent back up, then slogging out of the valley hours later to waiting armored vehicles that finally took us back to base.

That was the most physically brutal and demanding night of my life. But I knew then, as I know now, that I had nothing to complain about. I was a little beat up and freezing, otherwise fine. My soldier who'd accompanied me was also fine, and had even been laughing and cracking jokes while we'd been hunched over taking nonstop hail. His attitude was a great illustration of one of the most important lessons the military taught me: Be positive, because things never suck so bad that they couldn't suck worse.

I'm sharing this story because I think of it often; not because it was "traumatic" or caused me any lasting problems. I wasn't a victim then, and I'm not a victim now. I volunteered for Afghanistan and was a volunteer on literally every single mission I went on. Nobody ever forced me to leave the wire.

I share this story as a reminder to be thankful how incredibly fortunate I am. At war I dodged a lot of gunfire, a few bombs, and a couple of rockets. I lost count of all the close calls I had as a cop. But at 55, I'm still healthy and whole, with a beautiful wife, healthy and happy children and grandchildren, a career I still love, and decades of happy memories. Life has been fantastic to me.
