About a dozen members of the @EverettHerald news staff are wrapping up their final shift today, in light of cuts mandated by new owners Carpenter Media Group.
no more breaking news reporters, no politics reporters, no city hall reporters, no business reporters, no digital producers and no page designers.
for a million. fucking. people.
Today's a hard day. Twelve of our members are working their final shift. We bargained tirelessly for a month, but Carpenter Media simply refused to spare any jobs.
We were, however, able to negotiate optional buyouts, increased severance packages and raises for remaining staff.
Good morning! Remember us? We're finally back to the bargaining table with Carpenter after waiting two weeks for their bargaining team to return from vacation.
In that time we've put together a comprehensive contract and layoff proposal, which is now in the company's hands.
Let's play spot the difference!
Readers of today's print @EverettHerald -- largely produced by non-journalists -- surely won't notice the lack of bylines, the clunky looking headlines and the missing page numbers. Nor will they notice @snocaleb's intrepid coverage of our strike.
This print edition, including the original story, is now part of the @WAStateLib collection in perpetuity. It'll live alongside daily and weekly newspapers from across the state of Washington and be microfilmed for longer life when resources are available.
I don’t understand Carpenter Media Group’s MO. How come you guys can buy more than 20 papers in Oregon this month, but can’t keep on 10 essential journalists in Everett?
In solidarity with the striking workers of the @EverettHerald today. The readers certainly have noticed!
Gooooood morning, @EverettHerald readers!
Please support our strike by refusing to cross the picket line. Do not read or engage with @EverettHerald today.
And if scab workers from Carpenter Media Group contact you, please decline to provide an interview.
✊✊✊
@EverettGuild workers are striking tomorrow. Instead of reading The Herald or engaging with scab workers from Carpenter Media Group, join us on the picket line!
Tomorrow morning we will be going on a 24-hour strike. We'd rather be working on stories about the community we love, but our hand has been forced.
Please read the press release below, then come say hi to us as we march up Colby!
