Such an exciting night on the turf with MSHS coming away with 2 victories, 34-0 over Wichita South and 32-0 over Wichita NW. We were amazed by the talent on display in this flag football triangular! These student athletes are truly incredible.
I will say it again. 28 is way too small a roster limit for Soccer (lacrosse has 38). Can we operate a team with 28? Absolutely! But to be a hard and fast inflexible number is very restrictive when you consider the fact that we will be committing high school juniors in a couple of months and have to “project” what our roster will be 2 years from now. There is always some attrition so do we plan on that and if it doesn’t happen just cut players?
Having a four GK squad is the norm at many schools bc you could have scenarios where you are down to your fourth GK but now with 28 it’s unlikely we can keep 4 so I guess we’ll have to use a field player if that happens.
And what about the players suffering season ending injuries? The settlement offers zero protection for them if they want to take their redshirt year because we recruited their replacement years ago before the injury happened. Or we have to cut another player to keep them which seems unfair. There are a hundred different scenarios in roster management and having an inflexible # will create an environment where we are forced to cut players and commits every year, that wouldn’t otherwise be cut. I can accept limits but if the attorneys really put in the careful analysis and consideration as they said, they would never have arrived at 28 and they would allow for a couple spots of wiggle room within each team to manage red shirts and attrition. I consider 28 the bare minimum we would ever have to effectively operate a college soccer roster. The difference between having a 30 player versus 28 mandated roster limit is monumental. I just think it’s very sad this will create an environment in soccer where coaches are forced to cut commits and rostered players each year to meet this 28 limit. No “grandfather clause” can fix that.
🎥 Advice for ⚽️ Keepers 🧤
It often takes 10x as many matches, probably at least 15-30 to get a sample of a GK dealing with everything a keeper faces regularly in a season.
⚽️ GK 🎥 needs, in no particular order:
🧤 Catching Low, Med, High
🧤Crosses
🧤1v1 Duals in the air & on the floor
🧤Dealing with Traffic
🧤Sweeper/Keeper (or not)
🧤Set Plays
🧤Shot stopping from all distances
🧤Various dives to show range
🧤Reaction Saves
🧤Tipping
🧤Controlling the 18 & the space in front of them through physical control, verbal control & organizational control
🧤Organization isn’t easy to show in highlights so if all the other items ✅, we can do that through watching full matches
🧤Distribution in all its forms over all distances with a variety of nuance (pace, height, spin, no spin, etc)
🧤 The Modern keeper is playing with their feet 👣 as if they were an additional CB
🧤Lastly, GK is the one position where there can be real value of good training film & 5v5 sessions
Good Full match film will be crucial & there is nothing like going & seeing a keeper in their native playing environment
